Accused Bed Bath & Beyond Attacker Appears in Court

Defense reserves right to file motion on bail.

The Middletown man accused of stabbing a woman at Bed Bath & Beyond was stone-faced during an initial appearance in Judge Thomas F. Scully’s courtroom in Freehold on Friday afternoon.

Tyrik S. Haynes, 19, faces one count each of first degree attempted murder, third degree endangering the welfare of a child, third degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and fourth degree unlawful possession of a weapon. Police allege he stabbed a 29-year-old Keansburg woman 12 times at the store Thursday. Police say she was pushing her toddler in a stroller at the time of the stabbing.

Haynes’ attorney, public defender Patrice Hayslett, said in court that she would reserve the right to file a motion for a reduction in the $1,050,000 bail set for him.

The victim, identified by CBS News as Kerri Dalton, was in critical but stable condition on Friday, according to a press release issued by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.

Haynes did not enter a plea during the initial hearing.

The public gallery of the courtroom was filled primarily with members of the media.

Assistant Monmouth County Christopher Decker spoke in court on behalf of the prosecution but declined to comment to the media. Hayslett also declined comment.

The judge should reduce it. $1,050,000 is an awful lot. I saw reduce it to an even $1,000,000. That seems like a better amount. It's not like the scumbag can come up with it anyway. He should be burned, and stabbed just like he did to that woman and the cat

Of course! reduce his bail. Apparently when he was arrested and charged for the cat mutilation he was deemed free to walk amongst us as if he was a member of society with a small deviation. Law enforcement and public defenders are a huge issue. If we are certain he was the stabber....NO BAIL, NO TRIAL

This is scary. So close to home and no apparant reason for doing these things. Has to be high on something to hurt innocent animals and innocent people. Hope they hate cat killers in jail. At least the dirtbag is off our streets now not that it's any condolence to the poor woman and her family. My heart breaks for them. When are we going to wake up and figure out we need to do something? If animal killers are just being let go there is something seriously wrong.

Susan it could happen ANYWHERE. And you are right we all have to do something... I lived in Trenton for 20 years. Stuff like this happened every day. The first thing to do is.. Be aware of your surroundings, be aware of the people around you. Be able to defend yourself. Anyone can do this. Keys make a wonderful weapon. Scream, yell , kick.. or take a self defence course for your own well being. The courts are messed up and there are many nuts out there. The key is to defend ones self, and be able to help others. No one came to this woman's aid.NO ONE!! that is insane.

No, he was not high.. WHat happened is that the system failed to help when his mother tried over and over again to get him help. But because he is an adult every turn she took she was turned away. The system failed. I am so sad for both the victim and the accused. I am so sick over this.

My prayers for Ms Dalton. This could have easily been another Newtown incident. This man is sick. Our goverment needs to step up and protect us all by stepping in early. This guy didn't just harm an animal. He planned and carried out a sick act that officials ignored. He should have been locked up and evaluated! I can't imagine what would have happened if his mother had an assault rifle in the closet. The warning signs were there.

That's my point. He is mentally ill. The Judge should have recognized that and had him put away for evaluation. You can still "plan" being mentally ill. I believe he planned out adopting the cat and tortured it. The same way he walked around the property and planned out his attack. Sure, it was not the human that people may have known, he was in a mental state that is not humane. He needs psychiatric help and should have been obvious before the recent attack on a defenseless young woman.

I want to know motive. Why is that not even discussed in any of the stories, and don't give me some BS about him being crazy. That is not good enough.
Young pretty white woman... attacked for no good reason by a black man. Hmmm.... racism one possible motive? Why is the media not jumping to conclusions like they did with the Treyvon Martin case?

Why isn't this on the front page of all newspapers like the incidents with the guns. Perhaps it demonstrates that the solution to these acts of violence is not gun control but to address the mentally ill people that are drugged and living amoungst us without the appropriate supervision and oversight. There is one theme that is consistent in all of these incidents (the shootings in the schools, movie theaters and the pushing of people into the train tracks, this stabbing) a mentally ill person committed the crime. This one had no gun so to solve this problem are we going to close all Bed Bath and Beyond Store stores and require a backround check to buy a kitchen knife.??? Let 's fix the real problem, the legal system should not let these people go free and pychiatrists should disclose when a person has shown tendencies to carry out such unprovoked acts of violence. Until this is addressed the violence will just be carried out by other means, bombings etc.
Wake up everyone force your government to address the issues correctly!!!!!

Madeline you are so right! Firearms have been outlawed in England for a long time and violent crimes are actually much higher here. So guess what the new suggestions are in England...correct, ban knives with blade longer than ten inches like chefs knives! Google it and you will be surprised. A mentally ill person will find a way to injure and kill if that is the intent regardless of the method!

I smell an insanity plea coming..This guy looked and sounded like a zomvie extra from the Walking Dead..Anyone who burns a defenseless animal alive and then goes after a woman minding her business shopping with her child should seriously be locked up for a good long time! I would LOVE to hear what the idiotic judge that let him go after he was caught killing a cat on Christmas has to say about this latest crime! He really should have been behind bars already..All this crime and he's only 19??!! Where the HELL are his parents? You mean to tell me they could not figure out something is "off" about their kid??!! I hope and pray that they lock this degenerate up for a LONG time and I pray that the woman stabbed makes a full recovery and can move past this and get on with her life and live happily while this scumbag rots in prison!

His Mom is PLEASED he isnt out on the streets and she hopes he goes away for a very very long time...the kid is mental and his mom should have gotten him help or went to his hearing about the cat case and ask he get put in psych instead of out on bail...This is NOT a case of racism..he was staking out the shoppers entering the store..he was there walkin around with his head down and finally went after someone..How about the question of why the hell didnt anyone try and stop him in the store during the attack?? sure people called 911, but to let that sick ass walk calmly out those doors and walk across the street to his house?? I would have stepped in if I was there...have done it MANY Times in the past

Have you ever been in that store? In the Asbury Park Press,it said that she was shopping for curtains. The curtain section is in the back of the store and the curtains are displayed on walls made to look like windows. If she was behind one of those walls it would be impossible to see her from the aisle. He came up from behind and stabbed her in the back 12 times.Yeah, someone called 911,and then stayed with the victim, perhaps tried to stop the bleeding, until the ambulance arrived. Gotta love those Monday morning quarterbacks!

Not at all I am a Mom of 3 who was raised to help others, and am not afraid to get involved. I have stepped in to situations many times in the past. I can defend myself and if God forbid, someone else. Its called common sense... looking out for others, and just plain good manners. Something most people now a days no nothing of. I still do not understand WHY NO ONE stopped him.. not the managers, the employees, or shoppers, from getting out of that store! A bunch of sheep.. that's what people have become. And no offence, but it seems like most of Middletown is like that. No one wants to help anyone. Shame.

Oh my goodness. You are so right. This sick kid is someones child. A sick child who clearly needed help. The system failed him, his parents and the community. Lets put the blame where it belongs. This kid should have in in a hospital getting the treatment he was in dire need of last month and who knows how much longer. The cat thing was the screams for help. People heard, the system didn't. Such a trafgedy for everyone involved.

This man lived across the street from a nursery school. He brutally torched a cat to death and was left to roam the streets. Thank God the victim is going to live. Yes, this could happen anywhere but why? It's common knowledge that murderers start with animals first. Why wasn't this man behind bars. Where are the animal rights activists when you need them?

He was 18 and an adult - his family couldn't have done anything anyway. There's a huge gap in our mental health system with young adults in both both mandatory treatment and coverage. This could have very easily been a massacre. When are we going to realize its not about guns or knives or weapons at all...its about mental health.

How naive you are. It's a virtual certainty that when it is white on black, hate crime charges will be brought by virtue of the races involved alone. You never hear about it the other way around even though 90% of interracial crime is black on white. The whole concept of "hate crimes" is absurd because it only serves to further differentiate us by race, rather than make us a colorblind society. Your reaction to the valid point I made shows that you may be the one who has issues with race.

Mentally ill or not, if it was a defenseless black woman attacked by some white trash 18yr old man sharpton and the rest of the idiots would be screaming for race justice and you all know its true. Whens the last time any large group of white supporters rioted or rallied in support of violence towards a white person?? Never, why? Because white peope are afraid to be called bigots, but the blacks can get away with it and do, nobody will say a word. You righteous fools can say what you want but you know it's true. You dont want the finger of racism pointed at you. Look at the crime and violence in predominately black towns, much different than the suburbs isnt it. This is why peoe are outraged that the low income housing is here because it atteacts the animals from those areas, not say all of those people are not hard working, but the rest bring their animal like behaviour here. Nobody ever pointed out that the POS who murdered white Lynn Moretti a few months ago was black. Once again, white people are sheep, afraid to speak up because of the past of slavery. Get over it, it was a loookoong time ago and our generation has nothing to do with it, yetwe sit in silence while our people suffer.

I agree,I totally think this was just a random act of violence, nothing to do with race..I also want to say I am really sick of hearing how "the system failed" this monster..I'm sure to ruffle feather and tick people off but so be it BUT when I was 19 my parents knew what shenanigans I was up to before my feet hit the floor! And seriously, you're kid was just arrested for torturing and burning a cat alive on Christmas and you do not take him to the nearest mental ward OR call police and tell them to lock him up? I'm sorry maybe I'm naive but I think it is a parents job to raise and look after your kid and not the systems job..I'm sure Mom tried to do something, she would have to be as bad as him if she didn't but I really find it hard to believe that a 19 year old animal abuser and soon to be murderer could not have gotten some kind of help or the good butt kicking he needed from someone..Maybe I'm still living in the past but thats just my opinion.

You make a good point Christine. In a saner time, people like this we institutionalized where they couldn't hurt law abiding citizens. Also, parents were allowed to discipline their children so when they became adults, they knew how to act in civilized society OR they were removed from society. Now, political correctness idiocy mainstreams mentally unstable people into society and discipline has been replaced with BS "timeouts"

I said earlier, there were serious gaps in the system but systems can't fail - people fail to use the system. Insurance coverage for example, is just that - INSURANCE - so if you don't have mental health coverage then either get it or be prepared to pay out of pocket. You only get coverage for what YOU pay for - so that's no excuse. There are plenty of mental health social service programs if you put the effort into looking for them. Clearly, if someone is torching a living animal they need help.

Judging from his picture he is quite a large man. I doubt his mother could stop him no matter how hard she tried. And black people in general don't seem to have any problem disciplining their children. They usually don't buy into white America's aversion to spankings. Marylou you're correct in saying they have been blacks in Middletown for years. However, the amount of blacks living in Middletown is such a small percentage it's off the charts. Whether or not he picked her out because of color we may never know. But chances are if he was planning on stabbing somebody in our town they were going to be white because that's all we have in this town. He was acting strange while he was still in HS according to students that knew him. (My son is his age). I think if somebody gets it in their head that they are going to kill someone and are willing to risk their lives to do it they are hard to stop. And who knows if his mom would have committed him even if she could.

debbie,Middletowngirl seems to think that the problem is with the low income people, particularly the black people, that we have "allowed" to move to Middletown in the last few years are the problem.I've lived her all of my life and am rich by no means, and yet I don't go around stabbing people. And the black families who have lived here for years are good, hard working people, pehaps not all that weatlhy either. It's not an income level or color thing. It's about mental illness.

BECAUSE IN LESS THAN A MONTH HE STABS THIS BEAUTIFUL GIRL IN THE BACK MORE THAN ONCE. THIS MENTALY DISABLED MAN SHOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN TO LOWER LEVEL ONE AT RIVERVIEW AND HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN HELD THERE TILL HIS COURT DATE FOR KILLING THE CAT. THERE HE COULD HAVE BEEN EVALUATED AND AT THAT COURT DATE THE DOCTORS COULD HAVE GIVEN THERE OPINION ON HIS RELEASE. THUS AVOIDING THE CARNAGE AT BED BATH & BEYOND. THE OTHER FACT IS THAT PEOPLE ARE AFRAID TO INTERVENE IN SITUATIONS LIKE THIS BECAUSE THE GOVERMENT DOES NOT WANT US TO PROTECT OURSELVES. AS STATISTICS GO THE INCIDENT IS OVER BY THE TIME POLICE ARE NOTIFIED. .

THE POLICE ARE ACTUALY THE SECOND RESPONDERS UNLESS THEY SEE THE CRIME HAPPENING IN FRONT OF THEM. THE BYSTANDERS IN THE STORE OR SEE AN INCIDENT HAPPEN ARE THE FIRST RESPONDERS. IF THE GOVERMENT WOULD ALLOW LAW ABIDING CITIZENS TO CARRY CONCEALED WEAPONS THIS BEAUTIFUL WOMAN MIGHT HAVE BEEN STABBED ONLY ONCE BEFORE HE WAS CONFRONT WITH A LAW ABIDING PERSON CARRYING A CONCEALED WEAPON. WHEN A DRUNK DRIVER OR A PERSON KILLS SOMEONE WITH A CAR THEY DO NOT BAN CARS THEY FINE OR IMPRISON THE PERSON. THERE ARE MORE DEATHS BY KNIVES THAN GUNS BUT YET DO THEY BAN KNIVES NO THEY GO AFTER THE PERSON WHO IS DOING THE STABBING. THE DEMOCRATS DO NOT WANT GUNS BECAUSE THEY WANT ALL THE CITIZENS TO RELY ON THE GOVERMENT FOR HELP. WHICH NEVER COMES IN TIME. THIS COUNTRY IS ON A DOWNWARD SPIRAL FOR GUN OWNERS IT IS ALL A BIG MONEY GRAB. IF I WAS AT THE STORE I WOULD HAVE INTERVINED EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT ARMED. I WOULD HAVE PICKED SOMETHING UP IN THAT STORE TO HIT HIM WITH AND IF I DID GET STABBED AT LEAST HE WAS NOT STABBING THAT POOR WOMAN. INCIDENTS LIKE THIS COULD BE MINIMIZED IF LAW ABIDING CITIZENS WERE ALLOWED TO CARRY CONCEALED WEAPONS
