Freehold Borough Republicans Announce Council Candidates

GOP will not field a mayoral candidate.

Republicans MaryAnn Earle and Don Clayton will challenge Democrat incumbents Michael DiBenedetto and George Schnurr for two seats on the Freehold Borough Council.

“These two individuals have long standing interests in Freehold and have committed themselves to the future of their fellow residents. They represent the Republican Party’s initiative to rejuvenate our borough council with fresh ideals while staying true to the historical charm that is Freehold Borough,” Freehold Borough Republican Club Chairman Ed Scarfi said in a press release issued Monday.

The Republicans will not field a candidate to challenge the Democrats’ nominee for the mayoral race, J. Nolan Higgins. Mayor Michael Wilson announced last month that he would not seek re-election after 31 years on the Borough Council.

“Although running as a Democratic candidate, Mr. Higgins history as an independent in Freehold Borough would prove him to be a fair and balanced leader for Freehold residents. Thus, to run an opposing candidate for mayor would be unproductive and inconsistent with our committee’s principles,” Scarfi said.

The filing deadline for candidates is 4 p.m. Monday.
