Freehold Township Approves License Reader Purchase

The police department currently has seven plate readers on two cars.

Freehold Township Police Department will add a new automated license plate reader to its law enforcement tool kit.

The Freehold Township Committee approved a $22,600 contract with North Carolina-based ELSAG North America during its regular meeting at on Wednesday.

The Freehold Township Police Department currently has seven vehicle-mounted license plate readers on two police cars, according to the department’s Records Bureau. The readers scan license plates and can alert police officers if the vehicle’s owner has outstanding warrants or if the car has been stolen, Mayor David Salkin explained.

Township Administrator Peter Valesi said each license plate reader has been funded by grants.

“We haven’t paid for one yet,” Valesi said.

The newest license plate reader will be funded through a New Jersey Department of Transportation Highway Safety Corridors Grant. The township accepted the $83,790 grant during its Tuesday, Oct. 11 meeting.

“They work well. They work quickly,” Valesi said.
