Update: Griffiths Beats Out Incumbent, Democrats Fill Freehold Borough Council

Sharon Shutzer re-elected. Ron Griffiths beats out incumbent John Newman.

This story was updated on Wednesday with comments from Griffiths and Newman.

In 2013, the Freehold Borough Council will seat all Democrats.

Unofficial results from the Freehold Borough Clerk’s office show that residents re-elected Freehold Borough Council President Sharon Shutzer and brought Ron Griffiths aboard. Griffiths beat out incumbent John Newman, the sole Republican on the Council.

"Frankly, I was surprised by the amount of votes we [Democrats] received," said Griffiths. He continued by saying "I am looking forward to bringing new ideas forward and becoming a more efficient governing body."

The unofficial results were as follows: Shutzer brought in the most votes in Freehold Borough with a total of 220. Griffiths had a total of 200 votes. MaryAnn Earle had 146, followed by Newman who brought in 138 votes.

On Wednesday Newman explained that he plans on staying involved in Freehold Borough even though he will not return to the Council.

"I talked to Nolan before the election about the possibility of this outcome and I discussed with him that I still want to be involved and finish projects that I have started," said Newman. "Congratulations to Ron and Sharon. I have had the pleasure of working with Sharon and I know that she and Ron are both very dedicated to this town and will do a great job."

To Ron Griffiths: I know that you will be mentored by the rest of the Council but you have to keep yourself in the high-learning curve and go beyond the interests you expressed at the Democratic debate. You represent the entire town, not just the seniors citizens any more. John Newman did a class act as councilman and it is his shoes you are filling. Wishing the best for you!

Sincere Congrats to Sharon Shutzer, she has always been a classy lady and very dedicated to the Boro. Congrats to Ron, I'm sure you will do a good job, you have some large shoes to fill. John Newman was EXCELLENT in his time on council. He was very dedicated, hard working and extremely fair and classy. John, you won in a town were no Republicans ever win! Congrats to you and Thank You for your service!

It is about time that Shutzer got out of office. She does nothing for the boro and she has been in office too long. She does not put any initiative into anything. Where is she was tragedy strikes the boro such as the storm in July and the hurricane, she just went around posting her vote for me signs. Get out of office it is way past time. You need to retire and let new blood in so the boro can change and become a better place to live

Here here, out with the old and in with the new. If the boro is going to move forward, it needs to with the next generation that's going to be living in it.

Congratulations to both Sharon and Ron. I also want to thank John Newman for all his hard work and dedication. I thought his email updates were a wonderful example of innovative ideas that kept our town informed, and I hope someone on the council will see fit to continue this effort.

I wish Ron Griffiths and Sharon Shutzer the best during their upcoming terms. I'd also like to thank John Newman for doing a fantastic and often thankless job as the sole Republican on a Democartic Council in a Democratic town. Being elected or in his case reelected in a year that the Democratic Presidential and Senatorial candidates win overwhelmingly in the state is near to impossible I'd also like to thank Marianne Earle for her tireless efforts to make Freehold a better place to live. Please keep on plugging guys!
