Gun Privacy Bill Moves Out Of Assembly Committee
Sponsored by Assemblyman Dave Rible, the bill would keep private the names and addresses of gun permit holders
A state bill that would prohibit the public release of names of gun permit holders has moved out of a State Assembly committee Wednesday, officials said.
Sponsored by Assemblymen Dave Rible and Ron Dancer, both R-Monmouth and Ocean, the bill seeks to restrict public access to the names and addresses of gun permit holders under the state’s Open Public Records law.
Rible, a Wall resident, previously has said he is opposed to the release of such information because it could prove potentially dangerous to law-abiding citizens, such as law enforcement officers.
The bill, A-3788, passed out of the Law and Public Safety Committee Wednesday, Rible said in a release.
“Releasing personal information about those who have firearms permits or licenses puts law enforcement officers and law-abiding citizens in harm’s way,” Rible said in the release. “This bill is an important step in safeguarding a person’s right to privacy and protecting them from potential predators.”
The bill is in reaction to the recent publication of gun permit holders’ names and addresses in a New York newspaper.
The Journal News in White Plains, NY, published the article, “The Gun Owner Next Door: What You Don’t Know About the Weapons in Your Neighborhood,” which published the names and addresses of more than 30,000 handgun permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. The article, which obtained the names and addresses from publicly available documents, also contained a map of the handgun permit holders.
The paper received widespread criticism for the move, and when the outrage became threatening, it hired armed guards to protect its main office and a bureau. Employees who felt unsafe at home were offered hotel rooms, at the paper’s expense.
Rible has compared the availability of gun owners’ information to that of lottery winners, who can choose to have their personal information held private for a set period of time. Gun permit holders, Rible has said, do not enjoy the same protection.

This bill is driven by the paranoid , 'The guvermint is gonna take our guns' idea. No reasonable politician would support this bill , these assemblymen are pandering to the gun nuts and the vulnerable people who believe and parrot the NRA rhetoric, Obama's gonna take our guuunnns!! No reasonable, law abiding gun owner would care if that information is public, shame on these hack assemblymen.

I guess being a stupid conservative i missed the part in this law where the government itself was not going to have gun owners information. I totally thought it only applied to other citizens but i am just a stupid conservative..... On a serious note, i honestly thought all liberals were superior in intelligence yet John Walton does not even have basic reading comprehension.

Ok, let me see if I have this correctly, people that have guns, are at risk, because people who may not have guns know? Is that right?
And, as it goes if one were to observe an individual in public brandishing a firearm, then the totters right to privacy to bear arms means one could not yell out a warning of 'HE's GOT A GUN!'..or worse, call the Police to report a person with gun?

This has nothing to do with gun control John. This bill isn't putting guns in peoples' hands or taking them away', it is simply protecting the information of people with guns to not have their information posted all over the newspaper - their names, addresses = I'm sure you wouldn't either - this was a reasonable bill since the reasonable politicians all agreed unanimously...

You would think NRA supporting gun enthusiasts would be against this bill in order to "defeat the bad guys". After all the only way to defeat a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. If the bad guys know where the guns are surely they will come to steal them (no paranoia here). When they come the good guys can defeat them. Problem solved. Love Wayne LaPierre.

This bill is a stupid waste of time. In NJ, gun license/permits are public records, but are NOT open to inspection. They are exempt from disclosure by attorney general regulations (as per the NJPA website http://www.njpa.org/njpa/legal_hotline/access_to_public_records.html). I thought republicans wanted LESS government, and now these two tools try and give us more, for no reason other than to pander to the NRA?

Let's name the owners of guns - make their homes targets when nobody is home. BTW if they plan on breaking into that home and the homeowners are home but you live next door and do not own a gun - there is good chance you will get hit - home or not.
I agree if this information becomes public we need to list anyone receiving Social Services - fair is fair.

I enjoy how the same people who want to vilify and advertise the names of the people who have LEGALLY registered guns also complain because sex offenders have to register their whereabouts. But then they also they also don't want people prove where they live when they go to vote. Can you imagine if someone published the names, etc. of those who hire or rent to illegal aliens? They'd scream. Interesting how the PC crowd here seem to hold sex offenders in a higher regard than gun owners. Insulting, huh?

I love guns,have many guns.I also have a crossbow next to my bed. Shot a intruder 20 yrs ago living in irvington,nothing happened as far as judicially. Get a crossbow next to your bed as well,its great.
