Mayor's Bike Ride Kicks Off Health Initiative

Second annual event attracts dozens of riders Sunday

Scads of cyclists gathered at Borough Hall on a bright, sunny and warm Sunday afternoon for a leisurely, two-wheeled amble through borough streets and out to the Henry Hudson Trail for the second annual Mayor's Bike Ride.

The ride, part of an effort to link recreation and wellness, was part of Mayor’s Health and Wellness Initiative.

Led by Mayor J. Nolan Higgins, the ride left 51 West Main St. and snaked through town to a portion of the Henry Hudson Trail -- part of the Monmouth County Park system, the multi-use path runs to Sandy Hook.

All manner of cyclists rode -- some on three-wheelers and some with just one.

Higgins, a cyclist trying to get back into his former cycling routine, said the ride was started last year as an attempt to get people out and active. And to discover the Henry Hudson trail and other safe places to ride throughout town.

"It really went well last year, so we thought we’d do it again,’’ Higgins, pedaling his Trek mountain bike. “It’s a nice way to get people out.’’

Lynn E. Reich, a member of the recreation commission and former councilwoman, was among the riders in the pack.

"We want to get people out and moving,'' Reich said. "So much of what we do for socialization, like social media, doesn't involve actually meeting people. This gets people out together."

The Recreation Commission's goal is to have a planned borough activity each month -- whether it’s a ride, a walk or a run or some other physical activity.
