Neptune Girls Basketball Pummels Freehold Boro
The best team in the state, the Neptune High School girls basketball team defeated Freehold Boro today 58-19.
The Neptune High School girls basketball team, currently slated at number one in New Jersey, remain unbeaten (7-0, 5-0) as they defeated Freehold Boro High School (3-8, 1-4) on the road today in a Class B North battle. Syessence Davis led the Fliers with 23 points; Sarah Cobb led Freehold with five points.
“Well they’re the number one team in the state,” Freehold Boro head coach Jen Brzucki said afterwards. “We tried to give them the best game that we possibly could.”
Using a combination of a strong inside game, quick passing, easy baskets, and an aggressive press defense, Neptune took control of the game from the start. They scored the first six points of the game, four of them by Davis.
Nearly every offensive possession seemed to lead to a steal or forced turnover on the defensive end, which Neptune turned into more points. They finished the quarter with a 17-5 lead, and from that point on the game was never in doubt.
The second quarter was much of the same, with Davis and her teammates scoring on mostly layups and fast breaks off of steals and Freehold turnovers. Going into halftime it was 33-9, Neptune.
The Fliers made sure the Colonials had no chance of a comeback by scoring the first 14 points of the third quarter, to make it 47-9 before Camerin Spahn made the first Freehold basket with just over 2:20 left in the period. The third quarter ended with a 52-12 score and the game ended after a fairly benign fourth quarter, with a 58-19 Neptune victory.
Looking forward, Brzucki hopes her young team keeps getting better and better.
“Offensively, I want to capitalize on drive to the basket, be a little more aggressive. We’re a young club and we’re taking our bumps and bruises, but they’re learning and improving so that’s a good start.”
Freehold Boro returns to action Jan. 14 at Point Pleasant Beach.
