Poll: What Are Your Thoughts on Armed Officers in Schools?

Vote in our poll to give your opinion on armed officers in schools.

A month after the Newton school shooting rocked the nation; residents are still weighing in on gun control and school safety.

In many Monmouth County towns, schools are working with their police forces to ensure safety. In response to updates from Patch editors, readers are commenting that schools need more protection and using outlets on Patch to express their concerns and as a way to call others residents to action.

Marlboro made headlines earlier this month, when armed officers became a visible site in all Marlboro schools. In an article from Marlboro-Colts Neck Patch, the Marlboro Board of Education said that the decision to temporarily place officers in every school would cost the district an estimated $100,000 for 90 days.

Other Monmouth County school districts have decided to increase school safety through other measures.

The Freehold Regional High School District (FRHSD) has always had unarmed security guards in schools. In the aftermath of the Newtown, Conn. shooting, FRHSD Superintendent Charles Sampson said at a Board of Education meeting that the use of personnel was evaluated, including the deployment of school security officers and the utilization of teachers on duty periods. New changes to the security of the buildings include the installation of buzzer systems with cameras and having security guards man the areas by the entrance of the high school and at the delivery areas of the building.

In Freehold, both the Freehold Borough School District and Freehold Township School District also did not hire armed guards. Instead, both districts have stated that they have been working with their police departments and looking to their safety plans as a way to deal with a similar situation. Freehold Borough schools have also talked about updates to classroom doors, camera equipment and monitors.

After looking at your district’s response to the Newtown school shooting, are you happy with your school’s safety plan, or do you feel there should be more security such as armed guards in schools. Vote in our poll and tell us your opinion.

I beleive school security should be much tighter but do not agree that an armed guards in the school is the answer. Cameras, buzzer systems & metal detectors would do a better job of deterring an armed intruder without a gun. If necessary an armed guard patroling the area but please No More Guns In School !

John,

Thats an ignorant statement! its time we address the world we live in today, its not 1950. Sad but in 2013, our children are sadly at risk more then ever. It doesn't have to be a shooter, it could be a child molester, crazy parent, anything. Arguing against security for our children in school using dollars as your argument is pure madness. I say do whatever you have to to keep our kids safe. We owe are children that much, they are our future.

Why does it have to be a policeman ? There are many Security Companies that have highly trained armed security guards that can be used. Not to mention retired police, retired military etc -- not only would that enhance the school safety but also add countless jobs to a market that offers few right now.

While everyone bickers about what to do the answer seems clear. The only thing that stops an idiot with a gun is a responsible person with a gun. Buzzers and intercoms sound like a bubble gum and tape repair to me. There are many retired police officers working in our schools. Allow them to carry a concealed handgun. They already have the legal authority to carry a gun, the school districts would just have to allow them to carry on school property. I know theres people that dont like the idea but we didnt create this mess. Sick people that murder our kids did! Its our responsibility to protect kids in schools and the only measure to stop an armed killer is with firepower. Hey John, I dont care the cost as long as my kids come home everyday. If we really looked at a school budget Im sure these security measures wont break the bank! I wonder what the consensus would be if Newtown parents were asked about armed secuirty in schools?

The difference between a cop and an unarmed security guard at our schools is simple. Cops will take action while the security guard will be hiding under the desk with everyone else. Obama suggested funding cops to be in the schools as of recently. Lets work that out.

100% agree, we need to ensure our children's safety at ANY cost! i live in a town where our taxes are over the top, why not allocate a portion of our already-too-high-taxes to make sure when we send our kids to school they return safely every day? I would imagine given this same question, Newtown, Columbine and all other parents of kids sitting innocently in their classrooms, colleges, movie theaters, malls, WHEREVER, would all resoundingly answer without hesitation YES! There's absolutely no price too high to ensure the safety of our most precious resources, so do we need armed police officers or trained ARMED security guards in our schools??? HELL YES! This is a no-brainer!
