UPDATE: One Dead Following Four Car Crash on Rt. 9

The intersection of Rt. 9 and Elton Adelphia Road was shut down following a fatal crash between four cars.

This story was updated at 6:15 p.m. with information from the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.

At 11:18 a.m. a Freehold man's car left the southbound lane of Rt. 9 near the Park Nine Diner and veered into oncoming traffic, according to Charles Webster, Public Information Officer of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. 

Foreman Barkalow, 73, of James Street was driving his Ford station wagon when for unknown reasons his car crossed the median and collided head-on with a Nissan Rogue SUV. Following the initial crash between Barkalow and the SUV, a Honda Civic and a Mazda 6 collided with the Rogue.

A Freehold Township Police dispatcher confirmed that the intersection of Route 9 and Elton Adelphia Road in Freehold Township was shut down after the crash. A post off of the Monmouth County Police, Fire & EMS Facebook page, stated that emergency services reported to the scene of a multivehicle crash at the intersection. At 3:30 p.m. the group Facebook page posted that the intersection had been reopened.

According to Webster, Barkalow was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at 11:52 a.m. Barkalow's cause of death is pending autopsy.

There were no passeners in any of the other vehicles involved in the crash. All three drivers were transported to a local hospital for precautionary measure, they have all since been released.
