UPDATE: Power Outages in Monmouth County

More than 230,000 Monmouth customers are still in the dark.

 

Power outage numbers continued to drop slightly across the state Thursday. According to one utility company, though, residents shouldn't expect power back any time soon from a storm it is comparing to Hurricane Katrina.

JCP&L reported in a release on Wednesday that the majority of customers will be restored within the next seven days. However, it could take up to two weeks for customers in the hardest-hit areas to regain power, the company said.

JCP&L reported about 822,000 of its nearly 1.1 million customers remained in the dark as of about 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, according to its outage map. The number includes 233,899 in Monmouth, down from the 264,061 who were without power late Wednesday night.

“The damage from Hurricane Sandy far exceeds what we saw from Hurricane Irene or the October 2011 snowstorm,” said Don Lynch, president of JCP&L, in a release.  “While we were better prepared for Hurricane Sandy, the damage rivals that experienced during Hurricane Katrina, one of our nation’s most devastating and expensive hurricanes. In preparing for Hurricane Sandy, we positioned 1,600 line crews and 1,200 forestry professionals prior to the storm even making landfall.”

At the peak, more than 1 million of JCP&L’s 1.1 million customers were without power.

Please tell us when power will be restored to specific service areas, so that we can determine whether we need to flee our homes. "Could be tomorrow; could be a month" isn't helpful. JCP&L must know this information by now, but has resolutely refused to release it. For example, from that fatuous press release: what are the "hardest hit areas" where restoration will take another two weeks? You must know, since you made that statement...

Love the "outage map." It shows only the number of customers without power - not the percentage. For example, Interlaken is green - so it must be OK - until one checks the tabular list to discover that 93% of customers are out. Why not tell us what we need to know: base the color on the percentage of customers without power, rather than the number. Why not? Because the whole county would be "red"? Because using numbers of customers automatically protects virtually every municipality from being in a red zone, due to the number of customers? Some towns would show "green" even if they had no power at all. Clever, JCP&L. Clever, but unhelpful.

40 hours since utility poles down in manalapan. 1 on gordons corner and kingsley and 1 on pease rd. Fixing these 2 situations would restore hundreds of homes. Haven't seen anyone looking at them yet. Please we are begging for some relief

Gov. Christie talked about a resolution that was supposed to be passed penalizing the utilities 25k per day that power was out. The penalty now is a paultry $100 per day. We should call or email our state representatives asking why the resolution was not voted upon. What was the other pressing matter ?

It must be great to be a utility company...Nj American water STILL hasn't fixed the pipe from hurrican Irene, and now there are talk of water shortage. JCP & L knew about this storm, yet they still didn't have crews ready. It's unacceptable that we can not know when power may be restored. These utilities have Absolutely no accountability.

It's a shame most of the comments written here are from people who have no clue how the power grid works. To start JCP&L could have had a million crew on the ground before the storm but that would be useless because crew can do nothing till the issues are diagnosed. Next, after problems are found, which in this case could not be till At best Wednesday morning or later crews could get to work and that was only if trees were not the issue. So now on Wednesday and Thursday trees could be cleared so linemen could work which would then mean if the only issue was a broken line it could be fixed by today, but as most of you don't know transformers were exploding all over so those had to be removed and replaced to restore power. It is only Thursday evening and power has been restored in some areas already so quit your complaining. If you have nothing better to do, get a shovel and broom and go help the people who really need help. This is not just the power companies problem it is everyone's. Instead of pointing fingers use those fingers to help someone. You will be surprised how much better you will feel from help resolve the problems than by complaining about BS.

If your description of the power grid repair process is accurate, it might be helpful for JCP&L's press releases to describe some of these nuances to the public. Generic press statements containing no specificity only irritate the situation. Many of the posts on this page express frustration over the vague disbursement of information. It would be helpful to many to know if they are two weeks out from power restoration. Understand that most individuals (myself included) do not have the same electrical grid repair procedure knowledge base that you seem to possess. I found your description of the process enlightening, but I don’t think people’s concerns should be written off simply as “complaining”. Not having heat, refrigeration or gasoline pose significant health and safety risks to many people affected by this crisis.

Christopher, I think the frustration of those who have commented is derived from a lack of meaningful information about service restoration. I'm sure all understand that there is a process that JCP&L is (or should be) following. People who are frustrated want to hear specifics regarding estimates as to when their part of town will receive service so they can make reasonably informed decisions as to whether they need to find shelter elsewhere. They may also want to understand a bit about the complexity of restoring a power grid - but for those just looking to keep their kids warm they don't care much about the details.

Sandy is demonstrating the incompetency of JCP&L. They could have planned better, managed their resources like a real company and delivered quality service. Instead, they give us third rate service, shoddy and spotty repair and their norm; they enjoy the position of utility monopoly.

I call on government to address this and replace management and give us a real power company.

I do think JCP&L should have gave us a better estimate on which day power would be restored. If we were so prepared as the governor said we were how come most of the state is still out of power. I think this should be a lesson that we need prepare further because storms are getting worse due to climate change. I live in a square mile long town Bradley beach and it is ridiculous we still don't have power after three days.

This might not mean much to some, but if it makes one person feel even a little better I'm glad I posted this...the post above about how the power grid works was a great post about what it takes to start repairing....and that person was right that power repair couldnt start until Wednesday....the power company did send for help before the storm hit. I live in Michigan and my fiancée works for a utility company. He and many others packed up all the trucks and left here Sunday morning at 3:30am to get to new jersey and find a hotel to ride out the storm. The hotel they are currently in has no power...they get up and head out at 6am work nonstop way into dark if they have trucks with lights, only to come back to a hotel with no power. So please keep your spirits up if u can knowing that your not alone and there are people doing the best they can.

I saw trucks in the Matawan-Aberdeen area today, however there is no way to know when power will be restored to each community. I live in Aberdeen as well and am without power. Hopefully it will be restored soon.

JCP&L is calling into 101.5 every now and then giving great updates. Almost ALL if not ALL JCP&L customers don't have power. They restored about 370k. But if anyone had to go out and drive to work today, you would see the amount of TREE damage that have brought down power lines as well as the various blown transformers. Unfortunately, these are huge trees that take hours to cut up and remove. It is frustrating. I live off of Rt 33 and it is frustrating to see certain, random places with power right down the block. However, we do have to be grateful that we are just cold and in the dark and not out of a home. Maybe we need to complain to Manalapan to keep us in the loop, as JCP&L has had to keep in touch with the OEM offices. At the end of the day, we have to be grateful for the extra help coming from out of state..or we would probably be even further behind the cleanup process

As far as Woodward Rd. damage isn't too bad. A few branches and such. Just no power and limited cellphone reception.

And for PSE&G just remember that they handle a more urban area and fixing an area may mean more people get power back than around here. They also were affected differently by the storm than us. Maybe once they restore all of their customers' power they will send their crews to help us out.

I live and travel throughout the Freehold/Marlboro/Sea Shore area. During the past week I've seen a lot of damage. More destruction than I've seen in all my 63 years on this earth. Today (11/1/12), my personal situation required that I travel south on I-95. From 9:00am until we stopped driving @ 3:30pm, I saw not one, not 10, but at least 50 utility truck convoys (4 to 8 trucks) all headed North on I-95. Hang on guys... A MASSIVE Repair Calvary is on the way. God Bless, Be safe, & Take care of each other.

I empathize with all of you who are without power. My friend in Asbury Park (Jersey Shore) is still without power, too. I live in Perth Amboy my power went out on Monday, 29 Oct at 6:00PM. I was told power would not be restored until 5 Nov; however, PSE&G had my power restored on Wednesday, (yesterday) at 3:15PM. Perhaps PSE&G is better organized than JCP&L?

Woulda bought a generator today but wasnt sure if it was worth it because weve been given NO time frame. Meanwhile i drove earlier around 8pm and saw 8 JCPL trucks sitting in pathmark parking lot with people standing around doing nothing on 35 hazlet, go down to sears/wendys lot further towards niddletown and 12 trucks sitting there off with no people in sight.
PSEG seems to be light years ahead of JCPL maybe they should be brought in and handed the JCPL accounts in the future.

PSE&G Assessed their situation and got power back to tons of their customers in east and north Brunswick where there was a lot of flooding. Middlesex county has been giving out ice and water in Sayreville . The whole Marlboro manalapan area has no gas no ice and they haven't given us any info. There may be a lot of trees down but no flooding. I haven't seen one truck out. Its a state of emergency but jcp&l are taking their sweet ass time. Mayor hornick is doing his best but is getting no more info then The rest or is.

Jcp&l are doing the best they can with what was dealt to them from Sandy, remember alot of the crews out there had to leave their famlies home without power to restore your service. When we get back to noormal you should all go out and buy a generator to be prepared for the next time we have an outage. There are crews coming from all over to help so give the guys outside a break they are doing what they can they don't need people yelling at them. On other thing that should be done to help is have a gas station set up strictly for the trucks trying to get power back i seen trucks waiting in line for gas for their vehicles making further delays

I don't believe the power companies or any other entity is picking and choosing who to help and who not too. I do believe and have seen many people working hard and offering to share what they have with others...please if your family needs heat and electricity complaining will not keep them warm seek the assistance thats out there it may not be as convenient and as comfortable as you would like but help is there if you need it...much time and man-power is being used still on search and rescue for people who refused to evacuate...Now if you are staying in your home where lack of heat or lights is becoming a safety issue for your families err on the side of caution and hope for the best....But staying and putting your families in danger because you "feel" things should be done a certain way in your time...There is no political party, elected official, customer service department, or any other human being on this planet who can undo what has been done here...by nature...and if you don't understand that then explaining how a transformer works is kind of pointless....

In times of crisis communication is key, and JCP&L is lacking severely in getting information to its customers. If they would give more clear time estimates instead of the blanketed "next Wednesday" or "7-10 days", people could plan accordingly, and deal with the reality of it, instead of constant uncertainty. I agree that in the grand scheme of things, a home with now power is far better than no home at all, we need to be grateful for what we have. I commend the JCP&L field employees for their efforts working outside to get us restored. But at the corporate level JCP&L is wrong, and they have failed their customers. Their lack of communication and knowledge is unacceptable, and furthermore, their service seems to have been worse than PSE&G and other power companies, seeing as 95% of their customers lost power in the first place.

Thoughts & prayers to all...In FL 2004 after each of the 2 hurricanes, 3 weeks apart, we were w/o power and water for 10 days, temperature 90 plus! Be patient, help at least one person (there is always someone worse off than you)! Keep the faith! God bless you all! Former Freehold/Brick NJ resident, born & raised. PS The following may provide insight. All numbers depend upon your specific location. As far as 'climate change' I'd like to point out a few things...1-This storm arrived during the time of HIGH TIDE, add approx 3 feet. 2-There was a FULL MOON, add approx 3 feet. 3-Wind generated STORM SURGE add approx 3-6 feet for a category 1 hurricane with winds of 90 mph. 4-Forward speed of the storm approx 18 mph add approx 2-3 feet. Therefore, accounting for, and adding; the high tide, full moon, storm surge, wind speed, & forward speed, PLUS the position of the north & south jet stream and position of the high pressure system = 'Perfect Storm'

Do any of you not get updates from the Township?

I recieved an email stating that JCPL are working on the substations for Gordons Corner Rd, Bradvelt, and Englishtown. They plan to have 80% of the cutomers served by those substations up TONIGHT.

Id say less then a week after the storm hit is amazing to have that many people back up and running.

If it happens is another story but they are out there working. I have had no heat or hot water and have been in the same boat as everyone else AND it's mandatory for me to report to work.....be patient and show a litle compasion for the people who literally lost everything.

All we are asking is for a better estimation town by town when power will be restored so we can make plans for our families. If it will be another week we need to stay with relatives or find other accommodations. Children are cold and it's only going to get worse. We know we are lucky to still have our homes and should not complain but we do deserve to have a better explanation and estimation of when we will be restored power !!! We are paying customers !! If my payment was a day late JCP&l would be calling me for an explanation !!!!

I am grateful I still have a home & am heating my home the best I can with steam from boiling water on our stove however I do believe that estimates should be provided to all whom remain without power. People need to know if alternate plans should be made. JCP&L has shown everyone they are incapable of effectively 'weathering' any storm.

You will hear nothing from Manalapan Township, They are useless. They don't update their website. They dropped the ball during Irene and here just as badly. They don't care. I am one of the lucky ones. I live on Sandpiper off of Gordons Corner and we got power back yesterday. But a development like Covered Bridge, which is all electric and filled with some very elderly people is still without power. I would have waited longer if they could have gotten them up and running. I don't understand why they weren't a priority, and why the township isn't calling Christie's office to get them some help.

Also, why doesn't the township have all the Sandy info on the homepage? Especially for those that are using the internet on smart phones. There is no one in that building that has any common sense. I know I plan to vote accordingly on Tuesday.

It's very sad to read the posts here, I have no power as well and no heat and I consider myself very lucky.! So many people have lost their homes, all their belongings and people have lost loved ones to this tragedy. I understand everyone is frustrated but try to be patient and be thankful you are alive and even if your house is cold and dark be glad it's still there... Reach out help your neighbors.. I did and it makes a difference.

Sharon, while it's true that there are worse problems than being without power, and therefore heat, in cold temperatures, it does not in any way shape or form mitigate the fact that some of us are without power/heat in very cold temperatures. If the people who had home destroyed complain and moan about their problems, do we tell them to stop complaining because somewhere else, someone else has died?

Face it, although we are alive, thankfully, and our homes are standing (for those of us who had no damage) some of us have been literally freezing our butts off for 9 days. This is quite serious, and worthy us voicing complaints.
