Earlier this summer, Brookdale Community College President Peter Burnham pled guilty of stealing tens of thousands of dollars in taxpayer money. The web of corruption surrounding this case is just another example of Monmouth County Republican cronies profiting at the taxpayers’ expense.
Mr. Burnham, along with Brookdale Community College’s then-Board President Howard Birsdall and Brookdale’s Board Attorney John Cantalupo, were all close allies and major political supporters of the Republican Party establishment here in Monmouth County.
Mr. Cantalupo served as Freeholder Lillian Burry’s close confidant and official Campaign Treasurer in her 2005 and 2008 Freeholder campaigns.
In this same time period, Mr. Cantalupo negotiated the terms of Peter Burnham’s lavish Brookdale contracts.
This represents a clear conflict of interest, given that Mr. Cantalupo was Freeholder Burry’s right-hand man. Perhaps this is why Freeholder Burry sat silently on the sidelines as the truth about Mr. Burnham's theft was being exposed.
As a result of the Republican-controlled Freeholder Board’s lack of oversight, student tuition increased at Brookdale Community College -- while their college president profited immensely.
This is what happens when a chief advisor for the Republican Freeholders is negotiating salary contracts on behalf of a College President that is funded by these same Republican Freeholders.
It is time for Monmouth County taxpayers to unite against the Good Ol’ Boys Network here in Monmouth County.

Although Mrs. Burry has served the county for many years, I do believe it is time for her to retire with dignity and grace. She is out of touch with today's world and is far to personally invested in county government. To directly link her to the tuition increases at BCC is unrealistic in my opinion and smacks of pure politics. Look at all colleges and universities. Their tuition have risen exponentially due to a number of factors.

I believe that one reason why the Freeholders can't find every problem is real simple. It's a Part Time Job....The Freeholders have regular jobs but we expect them to have answers where a Full Time Committment is needed. We can't have Part Time Freeholders find FULL TIME PROBLEMS...Anyone have answer?

Sure lets pay them as full time workers and watch them do the same poor job they did as part timers. Except then I'll be that much poorer. My taxes aren't high enough already!

Ms. Burry is the hand picked protege of Harry Larrison, and continued his political shenanigans resulting in the mess at Brookdale. Former state senator, John Bennett, who amazingly now HEADS the Republican Party in Monmouth County, was hand picked by Ms. Burry to remain as Colts Neck attorney, long after he was fired by Marlboro for malfeasance. As a long time Republican, I will never vote for ANY Republican candidates as long as these two people remain in office! Did I mention that Bennett receives a $98,000 per year state pension, but was never employed by the state? He has the taxpayers of Little Silver to thank for that one. See the Asbury Park Press Data Universe for public employee pension details. Bennett has also been involved with the recent scandal in Keansburg involving former schools supt. $750,000 buyout package that was later killed by non-other than Gov. Chris Christie!

A select group of freeholders were responsible to provide oversight to the Brookdale budget, including Burnham's salary and perquisites, and they failed miserably. I doubt it was because they were Republicans that the fox had the run of the henhouse. The freeholders simply aren't equipped to oversee a large program like Brookdale, whether they are working full time or part time.
The only reason the freeholders stumbled on Burnham's fraudulent acts was their bruised egos. Burnham had challenged the freeholders by raising tuition to avoid cuts in school program that would have resulted from a recent slash in county funding. They were miffed that he had the unmitigated gall not to get with their program and slash education.
None of the freeholders assigned to oversight had the right to claim they did their oversight job. The idea that they were appalled at his high salary, perquisites, etc,, ideas that raged in the newspapers, was a weak argument. They were lucky to stumble on a smoking gun. It was only after they started digging that they found justification for their contempt. Otherwise their shock and awe at Burnham would have been totally disingenuous.

That corpse Burry should've been gone many many years ago. But of course the blind sheep keep voting her back in. If the feds looked into her doings they would have a field day.

I have been reading the following blogs. Since Chairman Vin Gopal heads a group of Monmouth County Democrats that simply cannot match what the Republicans have done in a few short years -- he has to go on to personal attacks
So please, Mr. Gopal -- have your fun while it lasts. Corruption never seemed to bother the Democrats when they ran Monmouth County -- but it seems Mr. Gopal has a problem when Republicans shake things up and do something about the problem.
Trying to cast a net over everyone who associated with the ousted head of Brookdale is a pretty long, logical leap -- don't you think?

Brookdale recently named the newest building after a confirmed crook, Harry Larrison, the former freehold that was indicted in operation "bid rig". Larrison also used a $100,000 per year county bridge supervisor as his personal driver and assistant in charge of picking up bribes. HE also directed huge county contracts to family and friends.
How could the present Brookdale leadership and present County freeholders allow this monument to a crook to remain?

This seems rather muddled. Now, did Mr. Cantalupo negotiate "the terms of Peter Burnham’s lavish Brookdale contracts" in his capacity as Brookdale's attorney, or did he negotiate "salary contracts on behalf of a College President that is funded by these same Republican Freeholders"? That is, on whose behalf was he negotiating? I doubt it was for both sides simultaneously. Side note to Mr. Gopal: turn on your spelling and grammar check.

Let's look at that statement again from Mr. Gopal: "ier this summer, Brookdale Community College President Peter Burnham pled guilty of stealing tens of thousands of dollars in taxpayer money. The web of corruption surrounding this case is just another example of Monmouth County Republican cronies profiting at the taxpayers’ expense."
OK, Mr. Gopal:
* Please show us the following direct link between how "Monmouth County Republicans" profited from the crook, Peter Burnham of Brookdale.
* Was it not the REPUBLICAN FREEHOLDERS that demanded the resignation and charges against Peter Burnham?
* Your logic is falling apart. How can the Freeholders be "for" and "against" corruption at Brookdale at the same time?

John Jay, with the exception of Freeholder John Curley (R) and former Freeholder, Amy Mallet (D) NOT ONE member of the Republican Freeholder's said anything!
Nor have they said anything about the pension abuse at the Sheriff's Department (see below for details). The Republicans are acting like the three monkeys--see, hear, say no evil.
Oh by the way, before you accuse me of being a Democrat--I am not. I am a former Republican now turned Independent due to the silence of the Republicans regarding this scandal and others in the past i.e. Operation Bid Rig.

The Democrats are like the lions in the jungle....watching the wildebeest for the sick or young and will attack when they feel safe.....I guess it's Lillian Burry this time.
How sad when they don't have anything of substance to attack.

Another scandal regarding Monmouth County is soon to explode taking down the Lt. Governor and deeply embarassing the governor. This brewing scandal which all Republicans in the county are aware of--has not raised a whisper. Not a call for an independent investigation--nada!!
Club Monmouth will be going through another Operation Bid Rig. See below for details:
