PUBLISHER AND AUTHOR PAIR WITH READING COUNCIL OF SOUTHERN NJ TO RESTOCK NJ SHORE SCHOOL LIBRARIES

Through its direct sales division, Usborne Books and More, children’s publisher Educational Development Corporation is collaborating with the Reading Council of Southern New Jersey to host a series of LITERACY events designed to generate free books for the many shore schools whose libraries and books have been damaged due to Hurricane Sandy.

Working with local Usborne Books and More Educational Consultant Mary Beth Spitz, author Michelle Nelson-Schmidt will visit local schools not impacted by the storm to speak with children and sign copies of her books. These schools will donate the FREE BOOKS they earn from the sales generated by the visits to the shore schools. Additionally, Usborne Books and More will match book sales 100% with an equal amount of free books. And Ms. Nelson-Schmidt, a Georgia resident, is not only waiving her normal school visit fee, but is also donating 300 books of her own to a High Risk/Low Income school district.

Business leaders are invited to lend their support by donating to a fund which will be applied to the Usborne Books and More Literacy for a Lifetime Matching Grant Program. Donations are being accepted at www.rcsnj.webs.com, and www.RestoreOurShoreSchools.com. Checks are to be mailed and payable to RCSNJ, PO Box 69, Mt. Ephraim, NJ 08059.

In an effort to bring national attention to the plight of the shore school libraries, EDC President and CEO Randall White has extended the 100% matching of book sales offer to any Usborne Books and More Educational Consultant who organizes a fundraiser to benefit shore schools with schools in their own area around the country. The efforts will culminate at a February 1, at a Community Night of Celebration with surprise guests, family activities, and an inspiring presentation and book signing by Michelle Nelson-Schmidt. The shore school recipients of the free books will be honored guests at the event scheduled for Friday, Feb. 1st at Rowan University, Wilson-Boyd Recital Hall from 7:00 until 9:30 p.m. Contributing businesses and volunteers will also be recognized.

If you know of a shore school that incurred damages to their books due to Stormy Sandy or for more information about other Literacy programs  or volunteer opportunities being offered for this cause, please email info@restoreshoreschools.com or visit web site
