The Jewish Heritage Museum of Monmouth County will present "The Land Was Theirs: Jewish Farmers in the Garden State" on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at 1 pm, courtesy of The National Center for Jewish Film, Brandeis University. Admission is free.

"The Land Was TheirsJewish Farmers in the Garden State" is based on the 1992 book by the late Gertrude Wishnick Dubrovsky which aired as a PBS documentary in 1993.The film is an absorbing look at Farmingdale, New Jersey, one of the many Jewish farming communities in the country established with the help of the Jewish Agricultural Society. The showing of the acclaimed video will introduce the Museum's new exhibit which pays tribute to the farmers and farming communities of Monmouth County.

Gertrude Dubrovsky was one of the state's leading historians of rural Jewish life. In the 1990's, .with a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, she conducted an intensive series of oral histories of the Farmingdale community which resulted in the publication of the book which brought her wide recognition as the state's foremost historian and interpreter of New Jersey's Jewish farming communities. She succeeded in having a documentary made based on her book in 1993. This award winning documentary will be shown at the Museum.

The Museum is a fitting venue for acclaiming the contributions made by Gertrude Dubrovsky to our American Jewish heritage. When the Museum was in the planning Gertrude related how she had always hoped the Farmingdale Jewish Center would become a Jewish farming museum but as that proved impossible she was delighted with the establishment of the Jewish Heritage Museum of Monmouth County and donated three large framed photographs of Farmingdale Jewish farmers to the new Museum.
