Senior Day Caps Busy Weekend in Freehold

A look at events happening around Freehold on Friday September 20, 2013.

There is something for people of all ages this weekend from the farmer’s market in the downtown area to Senior Day on Sunday and a wide variety of activities in between. 

The farmer’s market will be held today from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. when setup will begin for the Second Annual Open Space Pace which kicks off tomorrow morning in the same area and makes its way to the Freehold Raceway. On Friday night the VFW post will host a night of country music when Jet Weston and his Atomic Ranch Hands will take the stage starting at 7 p.m. 

There will also be two interesting events at the Freehold Raceway mall on Saturday. NYDJ will be hosting a styling and shopping event at Nordstrom’s starting at 11 a.m. The event is being held in conjunction wit the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund for “Fit to Cure.” For every customer who tries on a pair of the jeans $1 will be donated to the organization.

Also on Saturday Allstate will bring their “Reality Rides,” program to the mall near the Microsoft Store and JCPenney from 11 a.m. through 8 p.m. The machine going through 20 cities across the country and is a simulator meant to show people the dangers of distracted driving. 

Finally on Sunday the parking lot near the Hall of Records will be the site of Freehold Borough’s Senior Day weather permitting. The event will run from noon until 5 p.m. and will include community services geared toward senior citizens, local vendors, food, entertainment and more. The rain date is set for September 29.

The weather remains a variable for this weekend with rain possible Saturday through Sunday. Friday should be sunny with a high near 76 before a low of 58 tonight. There is at least a 30 percent chance of showers during the day on Saturday with a high near 78. 

The forecast for Saturday calls for a low near 63 with a 50 percent chance of showers. Sunday brings a 40 percent chance of showers with a high of 74 before a mostly cloudy night with a low of 55 when the sun goes down. 

Today is National Punch Day as well as POW/MIA Recognition Day. On this date 40 years ago Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in the Battle of the Sexes tennis match.
