Tuesday's Ballot Includes Local, County and State Races in Freehold

A look at events happening in Freehold on Tuesday November 5, 2013.

It is Election Day in Freehold Township and Freehold Borough and local residents have the chance to cast their votes in not only local and school elections but also county and state races as well.

At the local level in Freehold Borough incumbent Democrats Kevin Kane and Jaye Sims are being challenged by Republicans Robert Gibbons and Elizabeth Slade. Michelle Tennant, Paul Ceppi and Annette Jordan are the only three names on the ballot for three full terms on the Freehold Borough Board of Education. No petitions were filed to fill a one year unexpired term on the board.

In Freehold Township Mayor Barbara McMorrow is being challenged by Democrat Ken Sullivan for her seat on the township committee. Mindy Wille, Daniel DiBlasio and Vincent Bruno are running unopposed for seats on the Freehold Township Board of Education.

The three representatives in Trenton are also on the ballot this Election Day. State Senator Jennifer Beck, the Republican incumbent is being challenged by Democrat Michael Brantley and independent candidate Marie Amato-Juckewicz of the For the People party. Assemblywomen Mary Pat Angelini and Caroline Casagrande are being challenged by Democrats Edward Zipprich and Kevin McMillan.

Sheriff Shaun Golden is running for another term on the Republican ticket and is being challenged by Democrat Ruben Scolavino. Also at the county level Republican Freeholders Thomas Arnone and Serena DiMaso are being challenged by Democrats Brian Froelich and Larry Luttrell.

The National Weather Service is calling for a mostly cloudy day with a high near 51 which should make for a clear day at the polling places around town. The low for tonight is expected to be near 41 according to  the forecast for the day. Not only is today Election Day, it is also Gunpowder Day.

On this date in 1872 suffragist Susan B. Anthony was fined $100 for attempting to vote in the Presidential election. Woodrow Wilson was elected president in 1912 and Parker Brothers began selling the board game Monopoly in 1935. Famous birthdays today include singer Art Garfunkel, basketball hall of famer Bill Walton and singer Bryan Adams.
