Beat the Summer Heat with Energy-Saving Tips from Professionals

As temperatures rise, so do business’ energy costs. Hutchinson Mechanical Services offers tips for businesses to improve energy efficiency – and their bottom line – during summer.

  • Set office thermostats between 74 and 76 degrees. After hours, turn the setting up above 80 degrees. Consider investing in a building automation system to assure year-round comfort and savings.
  • Replace existing light bulbs with compact fluorescent ones which produce three to four times as much light per watt as incandescent bulbs. Halogen bulbs are also another energy-efficient choice for indoor and outdoor lighting and use about 25 percent less energy than traditional incandescent ones.
  • Turn off lights when not in use. It’s a myth that turning lights on and off uses more electricity than leaving the lights on.
  • Establish a preventative maintenance program for HVAC equipment and systems that includes changing or cleaning all air filters (preferably each month), replacing defective equipment insulation, ducting and piping; and upgrading to a high-efficiency chiller/AC system. New chillers are 25-50 percent more efficient than those 10+ years old.
  • Utilize a Full-Coverage Service Contract Agreement that provides 100 percent coverage of labor, parts and materials, as well as emergency service. Full-coverage service agreements offer businesses long-term advantages such as:
  • Reduces wasted energy costs by as much as 20 percent
  • Fixed annual O & M costs
  • Most of the risk is carried by the contractor
  • Protects the value of your investment

“Our 65-year history of providing comfort and savings to customers has evolved into turn-key solutions and incentives that make it easy for businesses to become more energy efficient, cut expenses and go green. We make it as easy as possible for businesses to go green by leading them through the entire process and providing them with energy saving options that best meet their needs,” said Ed Hutchinson, President, Hutchinson Mechanical Services.
