David B. Metz, Founder of Metz Bicycle Museum, Dies at 97

Funeral services planned for Monday

David B. Metz, 97, of Freehold Township, died Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at his home.

He was born in Cranbury and was a long time resident of Freehold. Mr. Metz was the founder of Builders Block and Supply Company and Central Jersey Pools, both of Freehold. He was a member and Past President of Congregation Agudath Achim. He was a chairman of the building committee when the congregation moved to its present home. He was a founding member of Freehold Area Hospital, now known as CentraState Medical Center and was chairman of the Board of Directors from 1988 to 1989. He was the founder of the Metz Bicycle Museum, Freehold, founder and past National Commander of the Wheelman's Club, a member of the Freehold Kiwanis Club, Freehold Exchange Club where he was awarded the Book of Golden Deeds Award and Freehold Rotary Club where he received the Distinguished Service Award and was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. He was a 50 year member of Jordan Lodge, F.&A.M. where he was honored for his distinguished service to the lodge.

Mr. Metz was Jewish War Veterans Man of the Year. He was honored by B'Nai B'rith, Israel Bonds, and received numerous other awards.

His wife, Sadie Metz, died in 2007. Surviving are his children, Martin Metz and his wife Laura, Lorraine Roffman and her husband Dr. Jeffrey Roffman, and Larry Metz and his wife Paula; three sisters, Bertha Goldberg, Helen Brager, and Frieda Yohay; his grandchildren, Steven Metz and wife Carrie, Sharon Rosenthal and husband Walter, Elisa Lemberger and husband Dr. Steven Lemberger, Michael Metz and wife Staci, Bonnie Troubh and husband Jed, Eric Roffman and his wife Sabrina, Todd Roffman, Lauren Troisi and her husband Peter, and Daniel Metz; and 15 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Freehold Jewish Center, Broad and Stokes Streets, Freehold on Monday at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment at Hebrew Benefit Society Cemetery, Freehold. Memorial donations may be made to CentraState Medical Center or the Freehold Jewish Center. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold is in charge of arrangements.
