A Freehold resident will be celebrating her 105 birthday today at Wedgewood Gardens Care Center.
Mary Messina moved to Freehold seven years ago with her daughter Ann and moved into Wedgewood Gardens three years ago. According to Ann, Mary was originally from Brooklyn, and moved to Staten Island where she worked at a Macy’s for over 25 years.
“I am her only daughter,” explained Ann. “But she has seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. A fourth great-great grandchild is also on the way.”
Wedgewood Garden staff knows Mary well, and said that during World War II Mary was a ‘Rosie the Riveter’. When asked what her secret to a long life was, Mary explained that her secret was eating broccoli rabe daily.
Mary’s birthday was celebrated with last week at the monthly birthday party held at Wedgewood Gardens. Ann explained that she is planning on visiting Mary today and will be having another celebration with her.
