Thanks to an online food drive, a Freehold teenager has made helping out local residents in need even easier than dropping off canned goods.
Brendan Gavaghen, 13, is working towards making his confirmation at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church this spring. Part of his requirements before making his confirmation, is to do community service. However, instead of just volunteering his time, Gavaghen thought of a high tech way to help Freehold Open Door fill its shelves with only the products they need.
After hearing about online food drives from an article off of NJ.com, Gavaghen used the website, You Give Goods, to help Freehold Open Door get items they need.
“I looked up a bunch of different charities I could help with the food drive, but went with the Freehold Open Door because it was the best,” said Gavaghen. “I’m very glad that it is local.”
Since the beginning of January, Gavaghen has been helping out Freehold Open Door with his online food drive. His slogan “send hunger packing” is doing exactly that. So far, Gavaghen’s food drive has brought in 76 pounds, totaling near $146 worth of goods.
Gavaghen’s current goal is to bring in $200 worth of goods to Freehold Open Door.
“I want to be able to donate $200 worth of food to them [Freehold Open Door], I don’t care how long it takes, as long as they get it.”
