Freehold Township Recreation Opens Summer Camp Slots to Area Workers

Parents who work but don't live in the township can enroll their children.

Parents who work but do not live in Freehold Township will be able to enroll their child in the recreation department’s summer camp this year. Freehold Township Superintendent of Parks and Recreation Sue Gough said that 300 slots have been made available for “business-residents.” To qualify, the parent who works in the township will need to show two paystubs dated after Feb. 1, 2011 when they register their child for camp at the recreation office at Michael J. Tighe Park.

This is the first year the municipality has offered spots in the program to nonresidents, according to Gough. She hopes parents who work in the area will find the camp convenient for their schedules.

“We’re really excited about it. We think that with people who work in the hospital, at the mall, and elsewhere, we could get a good response,” Gough said.

The department began accepting registration for the summer camp on Tuesday, Feb. 1. For those who take advantage of the early bird registration, which lasts until Thursday, March 31, the cost of the seven-week camp is $650 for residents and $800 for business-residents for the regular 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. schedule. Early and late hours are also available for an additional cost.

Township residents can also request busing for $235 per child. Busing will be available on a first come, first serve basis for campers registered for the regular 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. schedule. Nonresidents who have registered for a business-resident slot are not eligible for busing.

“Our camps are extremely cost effect. They’re a good value for the dollar,” Freehold Township Recreation Commission Chair Linda Jaye Molee-O’Brien said.

The recreation department’s summer camp is held weekdays at Michael J. Tighe Park from Monday, June 27 to Friday, Aug. 12. Children in pre-K through eighth grades are eligible for the program, and a copy of the child’s birth certificate is required at registration for first-time campers.
