Mayor's Wellness Campaign Cycles Across Borders

Several more events planned this summer as part of initiative.

Wednesday night was the perfect night for a bike ride and Freehold Borough Mayor Nolan Higgins and 10 other riders took advantage of the nice weather as part of the Mayor’s Wellness Initiative.

After meeting at Borough hall the riders set out through some of the back roads in the area before finally winding up at the home of Freehold Township Mayor Barbara McMorrow. Pictures posted on the Township’s Facebook page show the riders enjoying some light refreshments before heading back across the border into the Borough.

Mayor Higgins said it was an enjoyable night for everyone involved and was glad to see people come out for the ride. “it’s nice to have a nice relationship with our neighboring municipality,” he said of their halfway destination.

The idea for the campaign, he said, came from the League of Municipalities and has been warmly received by the local residents. “We’ve gotten a lot of participation,” he said. “A lot of people are very happy to come out and walk and ride.” Since it was introduced by the league he said several other towns have started similar programs.

There are more events scheduled as part of the campaign including weekly walks leaving Borough Hall on Wednesday nights, the YMCA Peanut Holloway Walkathon on August 10 and a “Paddle in the Park Event on August 18 at Lake Topanemus.
