Open Hearth Cooking, Home Depot Workshop and More for Your Weekend Family Fun

Need a game plan for the family this weekend? Freehold Patch has you covered. Each Saturday morning we’ll bring you the Grab & Go Kids Planner with five things that will keep them busy and you sane. All activities are either in the Freehold area or under a 45-minute drive away.

The historic Covenhoven House in Freehold will host an open hearth cooking demonstration on Saturday, March 5 from noon to 5 p.m. Visitors will be invited to sample treats provided by guest hearth cook, Susan Luczu, and tour the historic house built in 1752.

Kids Breakfast Club at Freehold Raceway Mall

The Freehold Raceway Mall hosts the Kids Breakfast Club on Saturday, March 5 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the food court. The event promises a host of St. Patrick’s Day activities, prize drawings and free carousel rides until 11 a.m. And if you miss this month, don’t worry: the Kids Breakfast Club meets the first Saturday of every month.

Build a Race Car at Home Depot

Every Home Depot across the country hosts a free kids workshop on the first Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to noon. On Saturday, March 5, the monthly project is a Home Depot race car. The workshop is open to children ages five to 12 years old. Along with the fun, kids learn about tool safety and gain some useful do-it-yourself skills. Frogs at Manasquan Reservoir

Have a little nature lover in the family? The Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center in Howell will host “Wood Frogs and Spring Peepers,” an exhibit on the area’s earliest breeding frogs. The animals will only be in containers but they’ll still be fun to look at. The free nature program takes place Saturday, March 5 and Sunday, March 6 at 1 p.m.

Tots on Tour and More at Grounds for Sculpture

Pack the kids in the car and take the 45-minute trip to the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton. The impressive site has 250 sculptures on 35 acres. On Saturday, March 5 at 11 a.m. and again at 1 p.m., the Grounds for Sculpture hosts Tots on Tour for kids ages three to five years old. Toddlers get a chance to learn about sculpture through hands-on activities. The event is held rain or shine and is free with the price of admission to the grounds.

Older kids can join in the “I’m Dying for More! Natural Pigments Workshop” from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Participants will make natural dyes from materials gathered at the Grounds for Sculpture and paint a wooden frame. The cost is $5 per child for materials.
