Monmouth County is taking a stand against prescription drug use with the first ever permanent drug drop box.
Instead of Monmouth County residents waiting for their local municipalities to hold “operation take backs,” Freehold now has a permanent place for all Monmouth County residents to safely dispose of their unused medications.
The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office held a news conference on Tuesday to introduce the drop box and announce drug programs local organizations in the county are working on.
With numerous elected officials and professionals in the addiction field behind him, Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden mentioned devastating statistics and explained how important it is for parents to educate their children on the dangers of prescription drug addiction.
“This is part of a statewide effort to take back New Jersey,” Golden said. “This effort will reduce the prescription drugs that are readily available to our children."
The drop box, which looks like a mailbox, is available for anyone in Monmouth County to use. The box is locked and bolted down. Names on prescription bottles are not recorded. The box is located in the lobby of the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office at 50 East Main St.
