The Best of Spring in Freehold

Can't wait for spring? Here are some events to look forward to.

Each Monday, Patch Picks brings you the best Freehold has to offer on a given topic. After an unrelenting winter, I’m looking forward to spring. Lucky for me and other Freehold residents, there are plenty of exciting events lined up in late March and April to look forward to as we push through these last few weeks of nasty weather. Here are the top spring happenings in the area:  

Mother Son Dinner Dance

Freehold Township Parks & Recreation hosts Mother Son Dinner Dance – Get Your Groove On! at the Excelsior in Manalapan on Friday, March 25 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The 1970s-themed event costs $35 per adult and $30 per child. The special night for mothers and their sons includes a pasta appetizer, salad, chicken entrée for adults and chicken fingers with french fries for the boys. The price also includes a professional photo, and each boy will receive a gift. Contact the recreation office at 732-294-2190 for more information.

Taste of the Towns

The Noontime Optimist Club and the CentraState Associated Auxiliaries will present Taste of the Towns at the American Hotel on Monday, March 28 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Over 30 chefs, vendors and restaurants will present sample entrees, wine and desserts. Participating restaurants include El Meson, Metropolitan Café, Park Avenue Bistro and Café 360, among others. Tickets are $75 per person if purchased ahead of time and $125 at the door. Funds raised will help support the Pediatric Rehabilitation Center at CentraState Medical Center as well as Camp Quality NJ, a camp for children with cancer. For more information, call 732-221-7125.

Freehold Boro Little League Opening Day

The (FBLL) is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. On Saturday, April 8 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., former players, coaches and anyone ever involved with the league is invited to attend a reunion celebration at the American Legion. The cost is $10, which will go to benefit FBLL. Tickets are available at Joe's Barber Shop or by calling 732-845-0256, 732-303-1039, or 732-461-4984. Commemorative T-shirts are also available by calling the above numbers or by purchasing them at the reunion.

The FBLL opening day parade will take place on Saturday, April 9 at 9 a.m. The parade will begin at the Railroad Plaza Parking Lot and continue along Main St. and Center St. to the FBLL Complex on Otterson St. A short Opening Day ceremony will take place followed by games in the major, minor and t-ball divisions. An “Old-Timers” softball game will follow league play, with former players participating.

St. Rose of Lima School’s 135th Anniversary

St. Rose of Lima School was founded in 1875, making it the first Catholic school in Monmouth County. The school will celebrate its 135th anniversary with a mass at St. Rose of Lima Church on Saturday, April 9 at 6 p.m. A dinner and dance will be held in the Crystal Ballroom of the Radisson Hotel of Freehold from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Tickets are $45 per person. Space is limited and advance ticket purchase is required.

New Jersey State Arbor Day

Freehold Township will host at Durand Park Memorial Arboretum on Friday, April 29 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will help plant over 50 trees from the State Forestry Council. Freehold Township is the longest running Tree City USA in Monmouth County, having received the honor 30 years in a row.
