Community Paint Day at Mural Site on Saturday [VIDEO]

Freehold Borough Arts Council invites residents to take part in the Mural Park Project.

Grab a paintbrush and head over to Downtown Freehold on Saturday.

The Freehold Borough Arts Council (FBAC) will hold a community paint day at Mural Park, 63 E. Main St., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents will be able to leave their mark on Freehold Borough by assisting in painting a section of the mural, according to FBAC member Jeff Friedman.

“Murals like this one inspire people to feel like they’re part of the downtown and part of the community. It builds on itself economically, culturally and socially,” Friedman said.

To spread the word about Saturday’s event and encourage community involvement in the project, the FBAC invited students in the Leaders Club to receive a tutorial from muralist Matt Halm at Mural Park on Tuesday, Oct. 11. Halm described the process of creating a mural to the children and FBAC members quizzed them on the significance of certain images included in the art project.

Halm’s design for the Freehold mural features historic and cultural images of the borough, including the Columbia Triumphant statue, Molly Pitcher and a Freehold Idol concert.

Friedman invited the students to take part in Saturday’s community paint day, which is open to all ages. (Children under 18 need to have a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian in order to participate.)

Residents who attend the event will receive a brief orientation on painting technique and the mural creation process. Participants should dress in comfortable clothes that can get dirty.
