Find out where the fun is in Monmouth County this weekend

Summer is prime time for parks and recreation departments across the county. Concerts, fireworks, movies and more will keep you entertained and won’t drain your wallet. Here’s what’s on tap in your towns this weekend:

When & where: Michael J. Tighe Park on Georgia Road in Freehold Township on Saturday, July 9 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Why you should go: This free day of fun and patriotism celebrates its 10th year with food, rides, fireworks and a concert by The Nerds and Screaming Broccoli. Other activities include a volleyball tournament, a car show, laser tag, and a teen center to keep the older kids entertained.

The high point of the evening will take place when the Veterans Community Alliance presents a check to a deserving veteran chosen by the organization.

What does it cost: Free

When & where: Normandy Park on Nutswamp Road in Middletown on Thursday, July 7; Thursday, July 21; and Thursday, August 4 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Why you should go: The Normandy Park Summer Concert Series has been enjoyed by Middletown residents for years. The kickoff performance on July 7 will feature the 63rd Army Band. Future concerts include The Beth Anne Clayton Band on July 21 and The Mahoney Brothers’ Jukebox Heroes Show on August 4.

What does it cost: Free

When & where: Sycamore Recreation Complex in Tinton Falls on Friday, July 8 at 9 p.m.; Friday, July 22 at 8:45 p.m.; Friday Aug. 5 at 8:30 p.m.; and Friday, Aug. 19 at 8:15 p.m.

Why you should go: Catch Men in Black this Friday, Field of Dreams on July 22, Shrek Forever After on Aug. 5 and Ratatouille on Aug. 19. What’s not to love about watching movies outdoors on a breezy summer night?

What does it cost: Free, but a donation of food item to benefit local food banks and pantries is appreciated.

When & where: Historic Longstreet Farm in Holmdel on Sunday, July 10 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Why you should go: Get transported back in time and observe interpreters in period dress showing you what life was like in Monmouth County in the 1890s. The blacksmith will be on hand to demonstrate his craft to young and old.

What does it cost: Free

When & where: Marlboro Recreation Center Amphitheater on Sunday, July 10 at 6:30 p.m.

Why you should go: Total Soul will start the evening with performances of hit soul songs from the 1960s through today. The Bronx Wanderers will then take the stage and pay tribute to the songs of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons. Firworks will follow the concert. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held indoors.
