Get Out: Lily Tomlin Performs, George Tice Presents His Photography, and More

It's a weekend of many art forms.

Mother Nature might be a bit confused about what season it is, but you don't have to be confused about what to do this weekend. These events offer you a chance to enjoy many different art forms, including music, comedy, literature and photography. Take in the retro-stylings of two different musical groups, browse through a huge selection of used books, view the photography of George Tice and be entertained by comedy legend Lily Tomlin.

When & where: Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m. at in Freehold

Why you should go: This show features some of the best-known love and friendship songs from the last 60 years. With everything from Cole Porter to the Gershwin brothers to Carole King, come let the Oasis Players help you feel the love.

Why you should go: Are you a bibliophile? Does the thought of looking through a selection of 5,000 books excite you? Each Saturday, the Northern Monmouth County Branch of the American Association of University Women sponsors a book sale at the Old First Church. The large selection of books is pre-sorted for easy browsing. Who knows what you may find!

What it will cost: Each book will cost you anywhere from a quarter up to $20.

Why you should go: How many performers can claim they've been nominated for an Academy Award and won an Emmy, a Tony and a Grammy? Lily Tomlin can! Whether you know her from as Ernestine, the sassy phone operator, six-year old Edith Ann, or any of the hundreds of other roles she's played over the years, this comedy staple is sure to entertain when she graces the Count Basie stage.

When & where: Sunday, 2 p.m. at the Monmouth County Historical Association in Freehold

Why you should go: George Tice, a Middletown resident and 10th generation New Jerseyan, has been a prolific and recognized photographer ever since picking up a camera at a photography club in 1953. He has published many books and his work has appeared at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in England, and The International Center of Photography, among others. In this presentation, he will speak about "Lifework," which is a retrospective of his photography from 1953 through 2010. Art lovers, history buffs and shutterbugs should not miss this!

What it will cost: Admission is free and open to the public.  Light refreshments will be served after the presentation.

 

When & where: Sunday, 7 p.m. at the Pollack Theater on the Monmouth University Campus

Why you should go: This lively musical review features singers, swing dancers and an orchestra, all performing numbers from the 1940s. The music, which was composed to lift the spirits of the nation during World War II, is sure to lift your spirits as well.
