Get Out: Muster in Manalapan, Eggstravaganza, and Musicals

This week’s Get Out listings features plenty of inexpensive family fun around Monmouth County.

Muster in Manalapan

When & where: Sunday, April 10 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Monmouth County Library Headquarters in Manalapan

Why you should go: The Monmouth County Library is commemorating the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War with a series educational and entertainment events at local libraries this month. The Muster in Manalapan is sure to be one of the biggest.

The Libby Prison Minstrels will play the greatest hits of the 1860s, and President Abraham Lincoln and First Lady Mary Lincoln will greet and take pictures with visitors. Noted Civil War lecturer A. Wilson is the event’s keynote speaker. Civil War-era food will be prepared by Whole Foods.

When & where: Friday, April 8, Saturday, April 9, Friday, April 15, and Saturday, April 16 at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, April 10 and Sunday, April 17 at 3 p.m. at Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank

Why you should go: Who doesn’t love this classic Broadway musical? The Phoenix Productions performance features 30 actors from across New Jersey. The lead role of Annie is played by Carly Nelson of Manahawkin. Annie’s beloved dog, Sandy, is played by Oliver who is a rescue dog trained by Broadway’s William Berloni, who also trained and handled the original Sandy.

To coincide with the work of Mr. Berloni and the production of "Annie", Phoenix Productions will also hold a special event, the "Annie Animal Rescue Adoption Event" on Saturday, April 9 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at their studios at 111 Monmouth St.

Eggstravaganza

When & where: April 9 at 11 a.m. at Cross Farm Park in Holmdel

Why you should go: Easter is almost upon us and your kids need to sharpen their egg hunting skills. The Eggstravaganza Easter egg hunt is for children in preschool through third grade. Children will be able to gather a limited number of eggs, which will be redeemed for candy bars after they are collected. Find the “special egg” to win a special prize from Mr. Rabbit. ' at Middletown High School North

When & where: Friday, April 8 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 9 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Why you should go: High school musical season is upon us and there are plenty of shows to enjoy from talented teens in your area. Starting Friday, Middletown High School North will present its spring musical production of Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein’s Cinderella, the classic tale of princely heroics and good versus evil, in two marathon sets.

Before the 2 p.m. performance on Saturday, April 9, Middletown High School North will host a Princess Tea Party.

What it will cost: $5 for students and senior citizens; $8 for adults

Green Thumb Family Event

When & where: Saturday, April 9 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wemrock Orchards in Freehold

Why you should go: Wemrock Orchards will ring in spring with its Green Thumb Family Event. Music will be provided by Thunder 106.3FM, and there will be special appearance by Truman the dragon from Kidsville News. Master gardeners will be on site to help kids with a complimentary gardening craft. Attendees will have a chance to win family four packs to see Sesame Street’s live Elmo’s Green Thumb show. Samples will provide by Wemrock Orchards’ vendors as well as the store’s pies, donuts and apple cider.
