“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” Play Reading

When & Where: Saturday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Center Playhouse in Freehold

Why You Should Go: The Center Players will perform a reading of the Edward Albee classic Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf under the direction of Anthony Marinelli. The action takes place in the living room of George and Martha, who have come home from a faculty party drunk and quarrelsome. When Nick, a young biology professor, and his strange wife, Honey, stop by for a nightcap, they are enlisted as fellow fighters, and the battle begins. A long night of malicious games, insults, humiliations, betrayals, painful confrontations and savage witticisms ensues.

Cost: A $5 donation at the door is recommended.

Earth Day at Huber Woods

When & Where: Sunday, April 17 from noon to 5 p.m. at Huber Woods in Middletown

Why You Should Go: The Monmouth County Park System celebrates Earth Day at the Huber Woods Environmental Center. Eco-wonders await at the Wide World of Recycled Sports, Eco-Carnival, Naturalist Corner and Craft a Better Tomorrow areas. For a nominal fee, the Frog Pond Outpost is only a wagon ride away. Enjoy a live animal presentation.

Run for the Animals

When & Where: Saturday, April 16 at 10 a.m. at Monmouth Battlefield State Park

Why You Should Go: Who doesn’t like to see a park full of adorable pooches? This is the second annual Run for the Animals, which benefits the Monmouth County SPCA. The 40-Yard Doggie Dash will be at 10 a.m. and the 3K at 10:15 a.m. You can adopt a pet at the event or bring your dog to join in the fun. The event includes free food, a DJ, t-shirts, trophies, medals and raffles. Contact race director Robby Murphy at runfortheanimals@gmail.com or 732-761-1945 for more information.

Cost: The fee for the doggie dash is $1 and the cost to run in the 3K is $13.

Conversation With Harriet Tubman

When & Where: Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m. at Eastern Branch Library in Shrewsbury

Why You Should Go: Eavesdrop on a special friendship. Harriet "Moses" Tubman, ex-slave, speaks with her friend, historian and biographer, Sarah Bradford.  They recall the hardship of slavery, escape, the Underground Railroad, and the true grit of Tubman herself. The performance is presented by Local Commotion Walking History, and will be followed by a sampling of Civil War-era food courtesy of Whole Foods.

Bluegrass Music

When & Where: Sunday, April 17 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Embury United Methodist Church in Red Bank

Why You Should Go: Expand your musical horizons at the Bluegrass & Old Time Music Association’s monthly stage show. The concert features bluegrass, old time, county and folk from such performers as North Country, Clan Suibhne, Past Times, Warm Hearted Country, and Jeff & Elaine.

Cost: $4 for Bluegrass & Old Time Music Association members and $5 for others.
