CentraState and Nordstrom Offer Free Breast Exams May 28

Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States. In fact, in 2014, it is estimated that among U.S. women there will be 232,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer.

Unfortunately, all women are at risk for breast cancer, and the risk of getting breast cancer increases as you age. But, no matter your age, every woman should know how their breasts normally look and feel.

With significant advances in treatment and the widespread use of screenings in recent years, there have been significant reductions in breast cancer mortality. The American Cancer Society continues to recommend annual clinical breast examinations and screenings using mammography for all women beginning at age 40.

To encourage women to recognize the benefit of an annual mammogram and the importance of routine breast exams, The Star and Barry Tobias Women’s Health Center at CentraState and the VNA Health Group NJ CEED program are partnering with Nordstrom to provide free breast exams for women that meet the criteria for the various programs. The breast exams will be on Wednesday, May 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the 3rd floor lingerie department at Nordstrom in Freehold Raceway Mall, Freehold, NJ. The breast exams will be performed by Lorraine Riker, APNC, AOCN, nurse practitioner, CentraState Medical Center. The purpose of this event is to promote breast care and breast cancer awareness and encourage women to schedule a mammogram.

In addition, any breast exam participant who follows up with a mammogram at The Star and Barry Tobias Women’s Health Center will receive a $30 spa gift card toward any one-hour, regularly priced spa service at the ABC Day Spa in The Star and Barry Tobias Ambulatory Campus. The Star and Barry Tobias Women’s Health Center, which was the first in the area to be designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE) by the American College of Radiology, offers technical expertise, test results within 24 hours, customized health education and counseling services from an all-female staff. The Star and Barry Tobias Women’s Health Center also provides a breast health nurse specialist who is a public educator on breast diseases and cancer detection. In addition to mammography, the center offers stereotactic needle biopsy, breast needle localization, and bone densitometry.
