WASHINGTON, DC —Today, Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) announced that low-achieving schools in the state of New Jersey will receive $9,485,864 in federal funding through the Department of Education’s School Improvement Grants (SIG) program. New Jersey is one of nine states across the country that will receive more than $71 million in funding through the SIG program.
"Our children and our communities should not have to wait for better schools,” said Congressman Pallone. “I am pleased that the Department of Education has selected New Jersey to receive this federal grant and given our state the opportunity to improve the schools that need it most. It is our responsibility to improve the education of all students and give every child the best chances for the future.”
These grants through the SIG program are awarded to state educational agencies (SEAs) that then make competitive subgrants to school districts that demonstrate the greatest need for the funds and the strongest commitment to use the funds to provide adequate resources in order to substantially raise the achievement of students in their lowest-performing schools. Under the SIG program, an SEA must allocate at least 95 percent of its school improvement funds directly to the school districts.
