Let Them Eat Cake

Dr. Sharon, Weight Management Physician, discusses the ability to eat cake & other fun foods while dieting.

Back in the 18th Century, a princess once announced this famous phrase, “Let them eat cake,” when she heard that the peasants in France were starving.  As a physician who helps children with weight management, this phrase has similar meaning to me.

I do not want the first thought that a new patient has when they enter my office to be that they will no longer be able to eat fun foods such as cake, ice cream, and cookies.  I do not want children or parents to think that they will starve when we put them on a plan.  My patients know this is not the case.

The word “diet” invokes fear into everyone.  No one wants to be told what they can and cannot eat.  No one wants to feel restricted, limited or hungry.  This is why it is important not to think about dieting or losing weight, but to focus on changing your habits so that your body is healthier.

When you decide the time is right to make the change to a healthier lifestyle, there is only one way to do it so that you can maintain your happiness with your food choices and that is through balance.  When you know you will be going to a party or out to dinner and temptation will arise to eat your favorite unhealthy meal or to enjoy some dessert, you can work it into your day by making healthy choices with your other meals and snacks.

My patients know they can eat cake, cookies and cupcakes and still lose weight on a regular basis.
