DEP: Soil Remediation No Threat to School Road Neighbors

A large tank recently appeared on a School Road West front lawn.

A large tank appeared on the front lawn of a School Road West home recently, leaving neighbors to question its existence.

According to officials at the Department of Environmental Protection, the tank is part of a site remediation for an Unregulated Heating Oil Tank.

According to the website, "The Unregulated Heating Oil Tank Program allows pre-qualified environmental professionals to investigate and remediate certain low risk Unregulated Heating Oil Tanks, including residential fuel oil underground storage tanks."

DEP Press Officer Bob Considine said the tank is for holding an settling impacted ground water that is pumped from excavation, treating the ground water and eliminating sewer water impact.

"This type of system is actually used frequently in homeowner cases and should not be the cause of any concern in the neighborhood," Considine said.

According to Marlboro Code Enforcement Officer Sarah Paris said a number 2 fuel heating oil tank leaked into the ground, and the DEP has contained the leak and is now in the remediation and filtration process.
