Eyewitness Account: The Day a Plane Came Through Moorestown

As the "miracle on the Hudson" plane rolls through town, a Patch photographer captures the excitement.

Editor's note: Our intrepid photographer, Ivrie Myhre, set out Sunday to capture images of the "miracle on the Hudson" plane as it came through South Jersey. Here's her account:

My name is Ivrie Myhre and I am fortunate enough to work as a photographer for Patch.com. This morning when I woke up, I could have never predicted what my day would turn out like.

After doing some photography work in the morning, I came home to my desk to do some editing. With coffee in hand I had settled down into my computer chair, when suddenly the phone rang. It was my editor with a request to take some quick snapshots for an article. The "miracle on the Hudson" plane was being moved through New Jersey on a flatbed trailer to an aviation museum in North Carolina and it was headed down Route 130 in my direction. As I watched the tracker on the J Supor & Sons Trucking website, I saw that they had strayed from Route 130 and began heading down Bridgeboro Roadd toward Moorestown. Camera in hand, I hopped in my car and headed out, not really sure of what I was about to witness.

I came up to the intersection of Tom Brown and Bridgeboro roads, where I decided to turn left in hopes that the plane hadn’t already passed. As soon as I approached the light, a Moorestown police car pulled out in front of me to stop traffic. I couldn’t believe the timing—I had just made it.

On the bed of the truck lay the wingless body of the massive Airbus A320-214. As it came through the intersection, I was in awe at the sheer size of the plane. Its ghostly shell was a truly amazing sight to behold, but the name "miracle on the Hudson" served as a reminder that no lives were lost the day of the accident.

While I was satisfied with the shots I had taken on Bridgeboro Road, my curiosity got the best of me and I decided to make a run further into Moorestown to see some more of this amazing voyage. The roads were clogged with traffic, but eventually I made my way to Main Street where the plane was set to roll through next.

I settled on the corner of Church Road and Main Street with a few other residents, hoping to catch a second glimpse of the plane. I traded stories with a Moorestown resident named Gertrude who was waiting to see the plane for a second time, just like me. I showed her some of my photographs from earlier in the day and we waited patiently to see it again. After some time passed, an officer told us the plane was having trouble making the turn from Chester Avenue to Main Street. My curiosity got the best of me again and I ended up walking closer to investigate.

People littered the street with cameras and cell phones, taking photos and videos of the immovable plane. As I came closer, I heard a voice shout, "This woman is going to take a photo of all of you for Time-Life magazine!" The energy of the crowd was electric; everyone gathered close together and held their arms up in front of the plane while the photographer stood on the hood of a police car. I was snapping away, catching the excitement of the crowd and the ecstatic faces of children on their parents' shoulders as they smiled for the photographer.

Finally, after an hour or so of being stuck, the plane began its journey again and the people of Moorestown cheered as the "miracle on the Hudson" plane made its way down the street and out of sight. The general reaction was one of amazement; it was a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience to watch such a remarkable piece of history come through (and get stuck in) their own hometown.
