Henry Hudson Trail Voted Best for Biking in New Jersey

Weather

Rain will continue Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service Forecast. The day’s high will be near 47 degrees and the overnight low will be around 33.

There’s a chance of snow Saturday before 9 a.m. and then rain after. Saturday’s high will be near 51 degrees and the low will be 33.

Warmer weather starts to creep back into the forecast Sunday with a high near 56. The overnight low will be 36.

Henry Hudson Trail

The best biking trail in New Jersey is right in Freehold, according to readers of New Jersey Monthly magazine. This is the second year in a row New Jersey Monthly readers have picked Henry Hudson Trail as one of their favorites. The 24-mile long trail has a northern portion from Aberdeen to Atlantic Highlands, as well as a southern portion that run from Freehold to Marlboro and Aberdeen. Bicyclists aren’t the only ones who enjoy the trail: walkers, runners and equestrians make frequent use of the former railroad right of way.

High School Sports

The Colonials and Patriots start the spring sports season Friday. Boro baseball and softball will play Monmouth Regional at home at 3:45 p.m. Colonials girls golf will compete away against St. John Vianney at that time. At 4 p.m., boys tennis takes on Long Branch at home and boys volleyball competes away against Christian Brothers Academy.

Patriots boys tennis plays Toms River North away at 3:45 p.m., while baseball takes on Howell away at 4 p.m. Girls lacrosse will compete at home against Toms River South at 4 p.m.

On Saturday, Colonials softball takes on Raritan in the Softball Classic at Manalapan at noon. Patriots softball will play Howell at home at 10 a.m.

Earn Money for FIS PTO

The Freehold Intermediate School PTO has joined in the New Jersey Natural Gas Preserve Community Rewards program. NJNG customers can help raise up to $5,000 for the PTO by using the free Conserve to Preserve Dashboard at www.njng.com. For every person who completes the Conserve to Preserve Dashboard home profile, NJNG will give the PTO $5.

Plan Your Weekend

The Freehold Borough Board of Health is holding a free rabies clinic at the firehouse on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The event is open to all, not just borough residents. Dogs must be leashed, and cats must be in carriers.

Battleview Orchards will hold a pruning demonstration on Saturday. Scott Applegate, orchard manager and co-owner of Battleview Orchards, will demonstrate basic growing and pruning techniques. These tips will set you on your way to growing bigger and better fruit. Registration will be at 12:30 p.m. and the demonstration will start at 1 p.m. Door prizes and refreshments will be available after the demonstration.

The Covenhoven House will hold open hearth cooking demonstrations on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. Observe 18th century-style cooking and experience colonial life as you tour the landmark house built in 1752.

St. Rose of Lima will hold a blood drive in the school cafeteria on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is sponsored by the St. Rose of Lima Faith Community Nurses Ministry. For questions or to schedule your donation appointment please contact Nelia Doropan at 732‐780‐2021.

Plan a camping trip close to home! Turkey Swamp Park’s family campgrounds open Friday. The cost of tent and trailer sites are $32 a night for county residents and $36 a night for non-residents. Of the 64 camp sites, 52 can be reserved and 12 are available on a first come, first serve basis. The two cabins on the campgrounds are available for $55 a night for county residents and $65 for non-residents. A two-night minimum is required for cabin rentals.
