Freehold Borough to Flush Hydrants Tuesday

Water pressure may be slightly lower and the water may be discolored as the flushing is performed in a neighborhood.

Wondering why your tap water is a little brown and your morning shower was not quite as satisfying?

That's because Freehold Borough is flushing the fire hydrants throughout the day on Tuesday, April 10.

According to an announcement from the borough, flushing starts at 8:00 a.m. and continues until all of the hydrants have been flushed.

The announcement also explained that water pressure may be slightly lower and the water may be discolored as the flushing is performed in a neighborhood. The discoloration is not harmful and will clear up if cold water is allowed to run for a few minutes.

Flushing is performed  twice a year in order to  remove any sediment that may accumulate in low flow areas of the water distribution system. The operation maintains the overall excellent water quality in the distribution system and ensures that each fire hydrant operates properly.

Surely this doesn't mean running water out of the hydrants the way the picture depicts right? We can't be that wasteful in what surely is going to be a dry year. Right??

Drove through town this morning and was pretty disappointed to see water gushing out of the hydrant and down the drain. There was no way to harness that to say, clean the plaza? Wash the side walks? It was a total waste of water.
