Dystonia Awareness Month

The Freehold Township Committee declared June Dystonia Awareness Month. Dystonia is a neurological disorder in which excessive electricity in the brain causes parts of  patient's bodies to painfully spasm, twist and contort uncontrollably, according to the Central Jersey Dystonia Support and Action Group. Some instances of dystonia are confined to a single body part such as the neck, foot, eyelids or vocal cords. Others, who suffer with generalized dystonia, have multiple body parts affected.

The Central Jersey Dystonia Support and Action Group, which meets at CentraState, works to raise awareness for the disorder. The group holds an annual dog walk fundraiser at Turkey Swamp Park. "Dogs for Dystonia... A Dog Walk and so Much More" will take place Sunday, October 9 from noon to 3 p.m. The event will feature demonstrations, games, and contests. Rescue groups will have dogs and cats available for adoption.
