March Madness Tournament for Charity

Weather

The National Weather Service forecast calls for a high of 72 degrees on Friday. Winds will be between 13 and 18 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. The evening low will be 42 degrees.

There is a chance of rain on Saturday before noon. Otherwise, it will be partly sunny with a high of 50 degrees and a low of 31.

Sunday will be sunny with a high of 49 and a low of 34.

Will Councilman Kevin Kane lead Freehold Borough Hall to victory? Will Mel O’Neal carry the Mayor’s Trophy back to the Freehold Borough YMCA Community Center? The Neighborhood Pride Committee will hold a March Madness Charity Basketball Tournament to benefit World Changers, a Southern Baptist organization that provides volunteers to make home repairs. (Last summer, the organization came to Freehold Borough.) The tournament will be played at Freehold High School on Friday, March 18 and Saturday, March 19. In addition to the Borough Hall and YMCA teams, Lomurro Law Firm and the Freehold Borough Police Department will also compete. Admission is free, and funds will be raised through food, beverage and shirt sales.

High School Sports

The Colonials varsity and junior varsity baseball teams play scrimmage games against Keansburg Friday at 3:45 p.m.

At 4 p.m., Patriots varsity and junior varsity baseball play at South Plainfield, while the freshman team takes on South Plainfield at home. Meanwhile, Lady Patriots varsity and junior varsity softball teams face Toms River East away at 4 p.m. and the freshman team plays them at home. Girls varsity lacrosse takes the field against West Windsor North at home at 4 p.m., while junior varsity plays at 5:15 p.m.

On Saturday, Patriots varsity softball will compete at Bridgewater-Raritan at 11 a.m., and boys varsity and junior varsity lacrosse will play Wayne Hills away at noon.

Schools

The Freehold Intermediate School Student Council Dance takes place on Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Clifton T. Barkalow Middle School will host the seventh grade canteen on Friday.

West Freehold Elementary School’s fifth grade intramural program will be held from 2:10 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. Friday.

Weekend Events

Head to Knob Hill Golf Club in Manalapan on Friday at 7 p.m. for . The event is sponsored by New Jersey Craft Beer  and the company’s founder, Mike Kivowitz, will answer your beer questions. Enjoy discounted craft beer and a special munchie menu. The beer list includes Abita Purple Haze, Unibroue La Fin Du Monde, New Jersey Beer Company Hudson Pale Ale, Unibroue Maudite, Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Stone IPA, and Victory Whirlwind Witbier. (The beers available are subject to change.)

The Freehold Township Heritage Society is hosting a on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The event will include tea, sandwiches, dessert and a history on the afternoon tea. Space is limited to 28 people, so reserve your space. Call 732-294-1877 for more details.

Didn’t get enough St. Patrick’s Day fun on Thursday? Freehold VFW Post 4374 will host an all you can eat corned beef and cabbage dinner on Saturday at 6 p.m. Call 732-616-9124 for more information.

The Knights of Columbus is hosting a on Saturday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The event will benefit the music department at Freehold High School and Knights of Columbus charities. The cost is $25 per couple and $7 per student in advance and $15 per adult and $10 per student at the door.

Freehold Elks Lodge #1454 will host from 9 a.m. to noon.
