NJ TRANSIT Offers Extra Service in Anticipation of Busy Holiday Week

The agency will also offer discounts to families traveling over the holidays.

NJ TRANSIT is offering additional service over the holiday week, along with a special extension of the Family Super Saver Fare, according to a press release from the agency.

The Family Super Saver Far allows up to two children 11-years-old and younger to travel free with each fare-paying adult and will be offered from 7 p.m. on Friday Dec. 21 through 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2 on all trains, buses and light rail lines. 

Extra service will provide more travel options, according to the release, whether customers are heading toward the mall for some last-minute shopping or getting a head start on the Christmas holiday.

Friday, Dec. 21

Trains, Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, Newark Light Rail and River Line will operate on the current weekday schedule on all lines. Schedules are available online at njtransit.com.

Buses will operate on a weekday schedule, however selected routes will be adjusted to match service with ridership demand. Early getaway service will be available from the Port Authority Bus Terminal between noon and 4 p.m. to accomodate the heaviest travel, with less frequent service during the evening due to low ridership. Early getaway service will also operate from the Jersey City Waterfront on the No. 64 and No. 68 bus routes. 

Saturday, Dec. 22

Trains, buses and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will operate on a schedule on all lines. Newark Light Rail and River Line will operate on a Saturday schedule. Schedules are available online at njtransit.com. 

Sunday, Dec. 23

Trains, buses and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will operate on a schedule on all lines. Newark Light Rail and River Line will operate on a Sunday schedule. Schedules are available online at njtransit.com. There will also be service on the Meadowlands Rail Line for the Jets game at 1 p.m.

Monday, Dec. 24

Trains, Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, Newark Light Rail and River Line will operate on the current weekday schedule on all lines. Additional early getaway service will operate from New York Penn Station, Newark Penn Station and Hoboken Terminal starting at 1 p.m. on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast (to Long Branch only), Raritan Valley, Morris & Essex (from New York only), Pascack Valley (modified getaway service) and Port Jervis lines.  

Bus schedules vary by route. Customers are advised to check their timetables or visit njtransit.com for schedule information. Selected routes will operate on special holiday schedules to match service with ridership demand, including early getaway service from the Port Authority Bus Terminal between noon and 4 p.m. to accommodate the heaviest travel, with less frequent service during the peak periods and later in the evening due to lower ridership. Tuesday, Dec. 25 - Christmas Day

Trains will operate on a weekend/major holiday schedule on all rail lines. Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will operate on a weekend schedule. Newark Light Rail and River Line will operate on a Sunday schedule. Holiday bus schedules vary by route and customers are advised to visit njtransit.com for details. 

Wednesday, Dec. 26 and Thursday, Dec. 27

Trains will operate on the current weekday schedule on all rail lines. Visit  njtransit.com for detailed schedules. Additional New York-bound trains will operate between 10 a.m. and noon on the Northeast Corridor. Customers are encouraged to travel early, if possible, when ridership is light. Select morning peak period trains on the Northeast Corridor will not operate due to expected light ridership. Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, Newark Light Rail and River Line will operate on a weekday schedule.
