Obituary: Eugene "Gene" Farrell, 59

Farrell was a founder of Hutchins, Farrell, Meyer & Allison in Freehold.

Eugene “Gene” M. Farrell, CPA, RMA, PSA, CFP, 59, of Old Bridge Township died Monday, July 2 at home. Farrell was born in Passaic and had lived in Totowa and Little Ferry before moving to Old Bridge in 1987. He was a founding partner in the CPA firm, Hutchins, Farrell, Meyer & Allison in Freehold and Toms River. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from Fairleigh Dickenson University, Teaneck. Prior to joining Hutchins, Farrell, Meyer & Allison, P.A., Farrell was a senior manager with Ernst & Young.

He had broad experience in government as an auditor for school districts, authorities, municipal and county governments, and as a comptroller for a large city in New Jersey.

Farrell’s responsibilities have included operational reviews, grant monitoring procedures, labor negotiations, budget and financing strategies, computerization of financial records, fixed asset reporting, preparation of official statements, training and development of accounting procedures manuals and assistance in the development of internal controls.

Farrell was instrumental in assisting the State of New Jersey in their deliberations on the implementation of Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) No. 34.

He was also a Certified Public Accountant, Registered Municipal Accountant, Certified Financial Planner, and licensed Public School Accountant. He was a past Trustee of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants and the past Chairman of the Society’s Governmental Accounting and Auditing Committee. He was also a past President of the Registered Municipal Accountants Association of New Jersey, member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, International Board of Standards and Practices for Certified Financial Planners, and an adjunct instructor for Rutgers University.

Farrell was predeceased by his parents, Eugene and Anna Farrell. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Wanda; a brother, Raymond Farrell, Esquire and his wife, Kim of Old Bridge; a niece, Kelly Farrell; and two nephews, Ryan Farrell and Regan Farrell.

Visiting for Farrell will be at the , on Friday, July 6 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. with his funeral service following at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Farrell may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2310 Route 34, Suite 1D, Manasquan, NJ 08736 or to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
