Olde Freehold Day Draws a Crowd

Area residents came out to Lake Topanemus Saturday for rides, food and music.

The Olde Freehold Day Committee promised a return to small town life during Saturday's celebration, and residents attending the activity-filled event found they delivered.

"Saturday was such a wonderful situation. People came together--whites, African-Americans, Hispanics, vendors, visitors. It was a great day for Freehold," said Freehold Borough resident Billy Anderson.

The event marked the 35th anniversary of the first Olde Freehold Day, which ran annually from 1976 to 1979 and returned for three years from 2003 to 2005, according to Olde Freehold Day Committee Co-Chair Rich Kane.

Saturday's Olde Freehold Day featured live music, rides, canoeing and paddle-boating on Lake Topanemus, food, and a fishing derby.

Councilman Kevin Kane, who helped organize the return of Olde Freehold Day, said he was impressed with how the entire community came together to make the event possible. He noted that Olde Freehold Day also introduced Lake Topanemus Park to many residents who didn't realize just how large and peaceful the location is.

Kane said he looks forward to continuing the tradition in 2012.
