Slideshow: Calm Before the Storm in Freehold

Downtown Freehold was quiet as residents prepared for Hurricane Irene.

Downtown Freehold was unusually quiet for a Saturday in the summer. Residents and businesses buckled down for Hurricane Irene, which is set to hit the region Sunday, Aug. 28.

Employees of restaurants on Main Street cleared outdoor tables and chairs from the sidewalks and secured them. Many businesses closed early Saturday, including , Ralph's Italian Ice, and .

In Freehold Township, a makeshift sign in front of Acme alerted customers that the grocery store was stocked in bottled water. Bread and peanut butter proved popular items in the store, as were canned soup.
