Students To Participate In Bike Course

Fourth grade students in Freehold Borough getting bike lessons

Freehold Borough’s 4th graders, all 150 of them, will receive a half day instruction in bicycling and bicycling safety as part of a cooperative effort from several community organizations, beginning today.

The bicycling program, today being held at the Park Avenue Elementary School from 8”45 a.m. to Noon, is scheduled to be repeated June 5. It then is scheduled to move to the Freehold Learning Center on June 6 and June 10, at the same times.

The program is supported by the Freehold Borough Education Foundation, the Recreation commission, the Rotary Club, AAA and the Bike Exchange of Trenton, according to a release.

Pupils who already know how to ride will learn basic riding skills, an awareness of bicycle maintenance, effective starting, stopping and scanning for traffic and the basic “rules of the road,’’ the release says.

Certified instructors from the League of American Bicyclists will lead the classes, the release says.

All participants will be given a bike helmet donated by AAA. Additional prizes and handouts will also be distributed including skills bookmark, certificate, bicycle pin, activity sheets, stickers and a “report card.”

The event is an official part of Mayor Nolan Higgins’ “Mayor’s Wellness Campaign,’’ and it may become an annual event, the release says.
