Born in Belorussia in 1893, the 10th child of a Jewish family. Soutine immigrated to Paris (where he met and became friendly with Modigliani) and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts.  He soon developed a highly personal vision and technique and made a major contribution to the expressionist movement.  In February, 2006, his painting Le Beouf Ecorch (Piece of Beef) sold $13.8 million dollars at auction.
