The Jewish Heritage Museum of Monmouth County will offer another in its ongoing series of art lectures on Wednesday, January 16, 2013; at 1 PM when it presents Professor Maurice Mahler speaking about “Chaim Soutine and His Friendship with Amedeo Modigliani.” The cost of the program is $5.00 for Museum members, $7.00 for non-members.
Born in Belorussia in 1893, the 10th child of a Jewish family. Soutine immigrated to Paris (where he met and became friendly with Modigliani) and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He soon developed a highly personal vision and technique and made a major contribution to the expressionist movement. In February, 2006, his painting Le Beouf Ecorch (Piece of Beef) sold $13.8 million dollars at auction.
Professor Mahler will talk about Soutine, including his friendship with Modigliani. A film about Soutine will be shown, followed by a discussion. Professor Mahler lectures at Rutgers Adult Education Program in Freehold and also at Monroe Township’s Adult Education Program.
