Marley Flynn and Bella Rivero, two students from the Catena School, organized a wonderful fundraiser for Memorial Elementary School in Union Beach after the town was devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

Marley’s father has an aunt who lives in Union Beach and has 3 children who attended Memorial Elementary school, so upon learning of the devastation there, she wanted to do something to help. After talking with her friend Bella, they realized how much they both wanted to do something big to help out that school and the kids who went to Memorial Elementary School.

They got the idea to collect school supplies for the students of Union Beach so that they would have the things they needed when they were ready to reopen their school. Bella and Marley decided to make a poster sized card and have all the kids at Catena sign it to show their support of the students from Memorial Elementary School. The card was placed in the lunchroom and every student signed it. Throughout the week after the storms, Marley and Bella collected donations form the students of Catena. The response from the students was overwhelming and they collected more than they could have imagined.

Marley and Bella have sorted and packed all of their school supplies and they will be delivered to Union Beach soon. Both girls feel so good about what they have been able to accomplish and they are proud of their efforts. Mostly, they are glad they were able to help kids just like them!
