Allaire Village- Rich in Baseball History

Allaire Village explores its baseball history in preparation for a 19th Century Baseball Reenactment!

The Historic Village at Allaire is presenting a new event for the 2014 season! Celebrate the rich history of baseball at our “Bog Iron Boys Pitching the Past” 19th Century Baseball Reenactment! On Saturday, May 17th, 12-4pm the Howell Works’ Bog Iron Boys will play the historic Hoboken 9 who have been kind enough to travel to Allaire’s industrial Village for an afternoon game!

Allaire Village is surprisingly rich in baseball history. In 1898, the Brooklyn Bridegrooms (who would eventually become the Brooklyn Dodgers) were facing turmoil within their team. The team manager, Charlie Byrne passed away in January of 1898, and was succeeded by Charles Ebbets (of eventual Ebbets field fame). In addition to the change in managers, Ebbets cause controversy by moving the team from Eastern Park back to South Brooklyn.

Amid the changes, Ebbets decided to hold spring training for the bridegrooms at nowhere else but the property of the Howell Works...Allaire Village! While here in March of 1898, they trained, and also shared ghost stories of the then quiet village! Under Ebbets' management the Bridegrooms would eventually go on to win pennants in 1899 and 1900. In the words of Ken Burns,

"In the years to come, Dodger fans would see more bad times than good, but hardly care, listen to the southern cadences of a pioneer broadcaster, and witness first-hand baseball's finest moment — when a black man wearing the number 42 trotted out to first base".

As Allaire has played a part in Dodger history we are re-creating a historic game! The game will be played by 1864 rules, with 1800’s vintage costumes and fun! The winner of the first game will play the Elizabeth Resolutes in a second vintage game! The area surrounding Allaire is filled with baseball history, learn more at this event filled with family fun!

After the games, walk down to the Historic Village to meet the players! Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase. Bring lawn chairs and blankets and plan to spend the whole day at Allaire!

The Baseball Reenactment is $5 per person, children under age 6 admitted free! Admissions opens at 11:00am, game kicks off shortly after 12pm! Pre-registration is recommended, call 732-919-3500 or visit www.allairevillage.org. Hope to see you there!
