The Latino Action Network [LAN] today endorsed the nomination of Superior Court Judge Faustino Fernández-Vina to the New Jersey Supreme Court.  Fernández-Vina is not only a competent and respected jurist but will also allow our state’s highest court to better reflect the residents it serves.

Last week, Governor Chris Christie nominated Judge Fernández-Vina, a Republican, to the New Jersey Supreme Court to replace Associate Justice Helen Hoens, also a Republican.  Judge Fernandez-Vina currently serves as Assignment Judge of the Camden Vicinage.

“In the past, we have argued against Christie’s appointments because they were part of an effort to radically alter the tradition of ideological balance on the New Jersey Supreme Court,” Argote-Freyre added. “However, this nomination maintains that balance while at the same time providing a measure of racial and ethnic balance to the high court.”

Christian Estevez, vice-president of the LAN, noted the need for Judge Fernández Viña to be complemented by two other competent and distinguished nominees that respect the partisan balance of the Court and reflect the state's racial and ethnic diversity. "We also ask the Governor to nominate, and the Senate to confirm, two additional candidates that would complement Judge Fernández Viña in both continuing the partisan balance of the Court and ensuring that New Jersey's highest court reflects the great diversity of our state," he added. "Unfortunately the other candidates nominated to date do not meet those basic criteria. We hope to see a package of two nominees to fill the remaining vacancies in a manner that preserves the integrity and functioning of the Court."
