November is Jazz Month at Monmouth County Library Headquarters

Come celebrate 40 years of free jazz as the Monmouth County Library presents its November is Jazz Month concert series.

For these past 40 years, Jack Livingstone has worked tirelessly to bring new, rare, risky, and unique forms of Jazz for Library patrons to enjoy. Livingstone began the jazz concerts when he was Monmouth County Library Director, and he continues to coordinate the Library’s jazz concerts in his retirement years.

Joe Alterman Quartet
2 p.m. Sunday, November 10

Jazz pianist Joe Alterman is 24 years old, and currently has a widely-praised CD entitled Give Me The Simple Life.  He earned this recent praise from Myra Chanin in the Huffington Post : “On piano keys, Joe Alterman's fingers become feathers. He opened with the toe-tapping, swinging, title tune on his CD, Give Me The Simple Life, followed by an act of musical alchemy which transformed Time After Time into a lush, sensuous, syncopated, sophisticated aphrodisiac that made me consider committing unspeakable acts. It also made me want to dance.”

The Virginia Mayhew Quintet
2 p.m. Sunday November 24

Come “BOP!” with this Library favorite. Saxophonist Virginia Mayhew is a rare forward-looking jazz artist who doesn't mind looking back. As well as her own quintet and quartet, she leads the Duke Ellington Legacy Band, responsible for the superb Thank You Uncle Edward (Renma Recordings, 2007) and Single Petal of a Rose (Renma Recordings, 2012).

Warren Chiasson Quartet
2 p.m. Sunday, December 1

Jazz vibraphonist Warren Chiasson and fellow musicians will perform a concert entitled “Good Vibes for The Duke.”  Chiasson, originally a member of the George Shearing Quintet, weaves melodic style with his distinctive four-mallet technique, during this celebration of the music of Duke Ellington.
