Brutal cold invades today, gone tomorrow

A powerful low pressure system to the east of New England will continue to produce powerful wind gusts over 40 mph through this afternoon and keep a brutally cold air mass in place through tomorrow morning.  The good news is that this air mass doesn't have staying power as temperatures rebound to the lower 60's by Saturday!

Isolated snow showers with scattered cloud cover can be expected through this afternoon.  The snow showers won't produce any significant snowfall accumulations aside from a dusting here and there.  Otherwise, the primary weather impact today will be the strong winds and cold temperatures.  Winds will be from the northwest at 15 to 30 mph with gusts over 40 mph through this afternoon.  Temperatures will struggle to rise into the mid to upper 20's over the interior and upper 20's to lower 30's along the coast.  Wind chills will range from the single digits to mid 10's today leading to a higher threat for frost bite.

Tonight through tomorrow, scattered cloud cover to clear skies can be expected.  I can't rule out a passing snow shower, but these will be rare and rather weak.  Winds will be from the northwest but weaken to 5 to 15 mph by tomorrow morning.  Temperatures will fall into the upper 10's to lower 20's for lows tomorrow morning and rebound into the mid to upper 40's over the interior and upper 40's to lower 50's along the coast.

High pressure will be in control on Saturday with scattered clouds expected.  Winds will back to the southwest at 5 to 15 mph, which will transport a very mild air mass into the region.  The roller coaster in temperatures will continue with temperatures in the mid to upper 30's for lows.  High temperatures will rise into the mid to upper 50's over the interior and upper 50's to lower 60's along the coast.  I can't rule out mid 60's in some urban areas on Saturday afternoon.  That is roundly a 30 to 40 degree swing in 48 hours!

A cold front will move through the region on early Sunday morning with a few widely scattered rain/snow showers.  Scattered clouds will follow for the rest of Sunday.  Temperatures will range from the mid to upper 30's for lows and lower to mid 40's over the interior and upper 40's to lower 50's along the coast for highs.
