Showers and thunderstorms linger today

The steady, heavy rainfall from last night is rapidly exiting into New England this morning as the warm front lifts northeast through the northern Mid Atlantic.  An advancing cold front today will keep showers and thunderstorms a threat through this afternoon for the entire Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas.  The good news is tranquil and comfortable weather conditions are on the way for this weekend through next week!

A strong cold front over the Ohio River Valley will rapidly press eastward through the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas today with scattered showers and thunderstorms.  A few isolated thunderstorms may become severe and feature very heavy downpours, frequent lightning, wind gusts over 50 mph, and small hail.  Winds will be from the southwest at 10 to 20 mph.  Temperatures will rise into the lower to mid 70's over much of the region, mid to upper 60's over Long Island and southeastern Connecticut.

Tonight, the cold front will exit leading to clearing skies and winds veering to the northwest at 5 to 15 mph.  Temperatures will fall into the upper 40's to lower 50's throughout the region.

High pressure will take hold tomorrow on through Wednesday with generally scattered cloud cover expected.  A few passing cold fronts to the north will keep the threat for an isolated shower in the forecast, especially to the north of New York City, however most locations will remain dry.  Temperatures through the period will be near normal.  Low temperatures will range from the mid to upper 40's over the interior and upper 40's to lower 50's along the coast.  High temperatures will range from the upper 60's to lower 70's over much of the region, mid to upper 60's along the immediate coast and over Long Island.
